I have Moose Milk allready made up, i am looking at, Knights B.P. Bore solvent, Muzzel Loaders Dam Good Black Powder solvent, and Laurel Mountain Black Powder Bore cleaner.
i know there are many many, other cleaners out there! But i was hopeing that, you folks could give me some advice on what to buy!
I want to do the best I can to take care of my C&B pistols, and my Sharps 1874.
I would be great full for any and all advice.

Take a look at the thread I started on "Cleaning cap and ball guns".

Hot water, soap and Ballistol: or: Water soap and Ballistol: or Water and Ballistol: or Water and any kind of light oil you can find.

Ace, just use the Moose Milk. That is the cleaner I use, then I wipe down with a little straight Ballistol if needed (rarely). DM

The best cleaner for BP is just plain old water.

Ransom Gaer

I use one of three cleaners.  These are all VERY expensive. ::)  One is the one Pettifogger recommends: plain old water.  Works very well.  Number two is number one with dishsoap added.  Get the dishsoap that's on sale.  It also woks very well.  The third is Windex with vinegar.  I use it primarily to clean the bore, when I'm not using plain old water or to swab the barrel at matches.  Windex I use primarily at matches if I run into any problems that are fouling related.  Obviously I'm joking about the cost of my cleaning solutions.  I see no reason to buy these so called special BP cleaning solutions when water works so well. Save the money and buy more BP.  By the way I do also use Ballistol on my BP guns.

:)Thanks Pards, I guess that Hot Soapy water and a good dying, lube everything, then finish off with Ballistol and your done!
That is the resaon I posted here is no better people to ask that those that doing what you want to know how to do! :)
On your Cap & Ball pistol, won't the wedges get worn after taking them in and out so much? I guess if they are made out of good steel they shouldn't wear anymore than any other moving part in a gun. I guess I answered that one myself!

Thanks again for the help! doesn't look like I need to go buy anything except for more cleaning patches, and most of the time I just make my own like a lot of people do.

Ace,  You have just heard the best advice about cleaning BP guns with the exception of lubrication. That cheap oil that Nozzlerag was talking about can be found at the local grocery...good old olive oil.  I am amazed that more people don't know about this. It was used for centuries until some  Yankee entreprenuer decided that sperm whale oil was better. If someone had told the Ancients about spermwhale oil, they probably would have laughed them out of town.  Oh well!

That's why it's a "wedge" as it wears it's supposed to go further into the wedge slot.  If it wears out, it is easily replaceable.

I clean with water and Murphy's oil soap. Then swab the bores and wipe down with some water displacing oil from Brownells, Kroil being a decent substitute. . Then lube all moving parts with Breakfree. Been working well for 5 years now.

I've been shooting black powder since '72 and always use Lemon Fresh Joy liquid dish soap and water.  (I'd like to say it's because it smells good and keeps my hands soft, but the truth is, I steal it fom my wife.)

At home I use the hottest tap water I can.  Rinse well with hot water and oil well, but not liberally.  Enough oil to cover the surfaces is sufficient.  It doesn't have to be running off in streams.

I've always used a good generic gun oil and have no rust and no problems.

Donno about "bumby" but I found a definition for "brumby" in Wikipedia......

QuoteThe term "brumby" also appears in American regional English, but it appears to have an entirely different meaning. It is used to describe persons whose behavior is inexplicable or whose attitudes lie far outside the mainstream. It is believed to have arisen in the southeastern part of the United States, primarily in Georgia and Tennessee, and is not in widespread use.

It also refers to wild horses in Australia.
