R Classic .45-70?  just back from town there was one of these on the rack. I could help myself so I fondled it a bit.  I didn't like the rear sights but I am sure that is just a minor detail.  I am curious, and am lookin for some range reports on it

Are you wanting to participate in side matches? ;D ;D

Here's a site where some folks are talking about it.  Maybe you'll find an answer:

I bought a H&R Buffalo Classic a few years ago. It's a great gun I'am getting 1 to 2 inch groups out of mine at 100 yards with the stock sights.I put in for a limited entry hunting tag for buffalo this year in northern british columbia and I'll use it if I get the draw.

Thanks Slim, good reading there.  I thought I had read a post of  yours saying you had one at one time.  This gun looks interesting for the money

I got a Buffalo Classic, fun shooting Gun.  first I tried Trail boss with some hollow base 405's.  shot good but could suck a bottle of trail boss empty real quick.  then I tried H4895, It also sucked up the powder and really let you know when you pulled the trigger.
Using trap door loads I was luck to finish 50 rounds in a day.  Around that same time I added this strap on leather butt cover that has gel cell inside it, made a real nice difference.  then I started using H4198, nice powder.  don't hurt as much to shoot.  With H4198 and 405 grain round points I got hits out to 400 meters on the steel turkeys.

I put a rear 5" tang sight on it, mounted direct to the wood.  I have used it for around 9 months and have not had any problems (even though it is mounted direct to wood).  In fact the results are repeatable.

I had a problem where the action would pop open every time I shot it (still using trap door loads).  I sent it back to H&R for repair.  while it was there I got a 24" 22-250 fluted bull barrel installed.  I installed an 8-32 power scope on the 22-250 and tried it out last weekend.  the factory trigger is so tight you can't hold it on the target while pulling the trigger!  I can't recall if it was that way before it went back to H&R, but it sure needs work now!

Looking forward to shooting both barrels, but I need to start practicing again with the wheel gun since my first CAS match is coming up in July.  Only so much time for shooting. got to work that part time job to pay for shooting.

Oh I forgot, yes I plan to switch to the "dark side" with this gun,  just never got around to it yet.

I have one of the Wesson&Harrington Buf Classics, lR. Pretty accurate gun with the load it likes. I put some lead in the stock hole to make it heavier. they are somewhat on the light side for 45-70's at length. I'm using 405's with three lube grooves and 25.4G of XMP-5744 in either WW or Rem. cases. Light'em off with CCI BR-2 LR primers. Have a Lyman 17A front globe with Shaver inserts and a tang sight mounted directly to the wood. After load developement, I haven't been able to shoot it much since the long range events are only at our annual and on a Friday at that( I'm riding the bus at that time)....................Buck 8) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Got one myself.  Found mine in a pawn shop.   No sights came with it so I found an old kreg jorgensen ladder rear on e-bay.  Mounted it on the barrel just ahead of the hump of the chamber, and put a silver blade front.     Lead in the stock to heavy it up.   Sent the reciever in to have the plastic trigger guard replaced with a metal one.  Now if I can onle get the trigger worked on.  Its a tad heavy.

I'm shooting lyman 405's behing 30 grains of hodgen 4198 with WLR primers.     Farthest I've shot it has been 300 yds.   After I got the sights calibrated, its shoots great for an inexpensive light rifle.

You ain't kidding about the trigger!  I added a 22-250 barrel to mine with an 8-32 scope.  Seems when you can see the target better you start to feel how tight the trigger is!  Some times I start to pull the trigger and think I left the safety on.  Wait, this gun don't have that kind of safety  ::)

Fiddler Green

I have one and love it to death! It shoots straight and (with the right load) isn't the punisher I expected. I'll be working up some BP loads for it. Anyone got any data?
