Hello I was wondering if anyone out there can help me with information on the serial # of my Spencer Model 1860 Carbine. This carbine was passed down to me recently from my father. Gun belonged to my GG Grandfather. I have been able to get a good clean look at the sn and it is 16732. The barrel is 22'' and doesn't look to have been altered in any way. Trying to find what State or company Spencer could have been issued to. Thanks  Matt B
Thanks for the Help

Matt,

Checked on your serial # 16732  .  .  . closest match to your serial # is 16730, a Spencer carbine issued to Company E, 7th Penna Volunteer Cavalry in February, 1865.  Your Spencer MAY HAVE BEEN ISSUED to the same unit.

Please read my Spencer Serial # Disclaimer at this link for more information:  https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=49949.0

Thank you for the information. Two numbers off from a serial number match is a pretty good. Does the February, 1865 date mean that's when the Spencer was issued or does it mean the gun was sent in for service.  Thanks again for you help.

Hello, Matthew:

There are several Forum Threads/Posts that can be searched here.
Please try searching Springfield Research Service and SRS. SRS will bring up pages of Posts on specific serial numbers, but some also have info on the holes and limitations in data.

Reading all the material should provide a clearer picture of the variations in Federal Ord. Dept Records.  Smiles.

Kevin,

I use the SRS books for my logical summations ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) Too bad they are not complete and so scattered with their serial # listings.
