:)After 60 days, I am finaley reading to sew my 1860's slim jims. Trying to learn to slow down and do things to my best from what you all have been telling me that i have been letting slide!!
Here is my question, I have never done a double stitch, and I am going to double stitch this.
So do I sew the inside first or the outside first! My thought was to sew the inside first and then if the glue had a air bubble you could push all the leather all the way around out word and after sewing the out side, if there was a place a person could burnish it out or so?
I would like to know how you guys do it!

Thanks

The way I was taught was that it didn't matter much which side you do first as long as it's the same all the way down so the stitches are symmetrical. With the second needle, go over or under the other thread when you start it but, again, do it the same every time. I usually do the side you see first but not for any particular reason other than it seems easier to make the finished stitches look the same. As to pulling the pieces together, when you tug both threads to tighten the stitch, That'll happen anyway.

Ace;  Pardon me if I misunderstood you.  You don't sew one entire side before the other. The stiches are done together. Once you have both needles through to the other side you can pulll both threads simultaneously to tighten the stitch without distorting the seam. The threads cross each other inside the stitch, if you get what I mean.

Start by running the thread through a hole 3 or 4 down from the start, and sew to the beginning .  Then you stitch the other way to the end.  At the end, run a few stitches back to lock the stitches. There are a few ways to clip & secure the end of the thread.  I run the last poke of the needle between the leather and clip it off.

I'm not that wise, so ask away.  Someone can always improve opon my response.

:)Once again I didn't make my self clear ??? ::) I know how to sew, and i do thank you for jumping in and adding your advice.
I am doing a 2 stitch up the holster, I put a normal stitch groove around, and then I set my stitch groover to put me another groove farther in by a 1/3 of a inch and put another stitch groove. All I was wanting to know, does it matter if I sew the inside line first or the out side line first!
I talked to TW and he told me has long as I had done the hammering along the glue line it shouldn't make any diff.
I am very sorry that I didn't explain my sistuation better! I can always explain better by talking than I can by writing ??? ::)
Sorry If i have caused any miss confusion.

I think TW told ya right. I don't think it will make any difference which row is sewed first. Personally, ....I would probably sew the imside seam first just because it seems it would be handier to do it that way for me.

Good luck,

I personnally would sew the outside line first, as I think if you do the inside first the leather would be more likely to start to separate from each other, making it more difficult to sew the outside line. You also wouldn't have to use so much glue, just on the outside edges,  the first  sewn line will hold it together fine for the second inside line. So why are you making 2 lines, just for looks?

 :)Howdy Slim,
Long time no talk!! I was going to sew the inside first, but as usual i sewed the outside one first and it worked ut good, so i will sew the the otherone the same way! I cannot belive it takes me so long to do anything!! At least I got one of them done! I don't know why I allways think everything has to get done now. but since I have been forced to do thing slower, i guess it is a draw ;D
Thanks for your thought Slim.
