Boondocker

Paron the type size Gentlemen, but I can't read most of the posts without a magnifying glass, so I thought I'd biggen things a bit for my post. I'm new to the activity of BPCR. Recently a couple of friends and I were talking about the Quigley bullet belt and how it was really a neat item of acourtrement. So I set about learnign how one was made. It took me a couple of weeks to get my fingers to do what I saw in the book and another week of practicing the lacing, but this is the result of this pilgrims effort.

The belt holds twenty two 45-110 black powder 550 grain bullets. I got creative with the fancy lacing between the loops on each side and you have to look real colse to see the 6-lace chevron detail. The lacing goes through both pieces of leather to anchor the belt loops.

The 8" Bowie knife is a flea market pickup I rehandled with a piece of Elk antler and the sheath is brain tanned deer over a heavy cow hide liner with red, yellow, and green seed beads for some froo-fraw trim like Quigley's was.

I've done some leather work in the past making things like shooting bags for my flintlock persona so I know a little about it, but making this all so it would carry the bullets and so that it would fit me when finished was pretty challenging. I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.

My next effort will be a holster for my 1854 44 cap and ball.

PS I didn't intend for the photo's to come out as large as they have - if anyone can edit that out I'd be thankful. They came rightout of Photobucket that way

Boondocker, welcome!!! Beautiful belt. I never thought about weaving in a piece like that. Looks great. Good work on rehandling that knife too. How wide is that belt?

For your photos, you can actually host them thru the site instead of using an outside host. That way the links dont get broken should your host change or service expires.
Just click the additional options at the bottom, click browse to find your file, and viola', your done. As long as its under 100KB, size doesnt matter. I use a resize program to get mine under 100.

Welcome, Boondocker. That's a fine belt. The lace is a nice touch. Since you were going to anchor the strap anyway, that does it with a little style. Now i have to watch Quiglley again to see it. ;D Thanks for the pics. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Howdy Boondocker,

Thats one beautiful belt. You have given me the inspiration to make a Quigley belt like yours for my Sharps.

Please show us your future projects.  Many thanks for sharing this with us.
You need to learn to like all the little everday things like a sip of good whiskey, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk,  and a feisty old gentleman like myself

The belt is 4" wide.  The belt loops are one continous strip of the same weight leather as the belt. As a suggestion to those wanting to make their own, make the belt to fit your waist, then lay out the number of loops you want by beginning in the middle of the back and working both directions. I made a paper pattern to help with the layout. I anchored the loop strip with a simple verticle cross weave at the very middle back then began laying the loops in.  Damp (not saturated wet) leather works pretty well and you can insert empty shells in each loop to hold the shape as the whole thing dry's.

Thanks all for your comments Gentlemen  ;D
