???has anyone tried to refinish those early 76 stocks? how did it go? what kind of wood is under that goofy finish they put on them? let me know. i'm thinking of refinishing mine and want to know what i'm getting into before i jump in. thanks, gotzguns

Major 2

Once stripped it looks like the light colored Jungle wood on early Stoeger SXS...
it is straight grained looks like sanded pallet lumber....
It is some kinda inexpensive medium hardwood variety and the Faux grain is applied and comes off with the finish....it is also sort of an open pore wood and a bit pulpish...

I believe you can order upgrade & replacement walnut stocks at a price from Chaparral and retro fit them yourself.
when planets align...do the deal !

Jordison of the NWMP

I talked with Chaparral and they do not offer replacement stocks for the 1876 NWMP carbine, unfortunately.

Grizzly Adams

I know the whole concept of the faux finish is offensive, but as long as it stays in place, I would leave it alone.  Why spend a bunch of $ on a conceptual - not functional - issue? ::)  If it REALLY bugs you, then spring for a custom set of wood from Treebone Carving or some other custom maker. :)
