The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws
« on: April 22, 2006, 03:35:02 PM »
I'd love to see this film.  Does anyone know how I could get a copy?  Bill Tilghman made it back in 1915, so I'd expect it to be in the public domain by now.

Most of the film is available from the National Archives, although some of it is damaged and a couple of reels are missing.

Thank you, sir.  I'll have to see what it would take to get it from them.

Two years ago, I was able to obtain a copy of this film and also "The Bank Robbery" (1908) on VHS tape from the Oklahoma Historical Society.  Cost was about $16 at the time.  Note that they custom-copy these on request; they did not have a "stockpile" of them.  You just tell them what movie(s) from their collection that you want a copy of, and they'll put it on the tape if it will all fit.  I do not know whether the same people still work there, but the POC at that time was:

Mr. Bill Moore
Oklahoma Historical Society
2100 N. Lincoln Blvd
Oklahoma City, OK 73105

(405) 522-6307

Good luck!

Coal Creek how did things turn out on obtaining a copy from the Oklahoma Historical Society? I went to their website and searched it, all I found was the a folder containing Two Liberty Theatre movie handbills concerning the release of a film describing Oklahoma outlaws and Marshall Bill Tilghman. n.d.

Well, I sort of gave up on that one.  I figured that the film would be in the public domain and easily available somewhere, but it seemed a little hard to come by.  I can't remember what I found out from the OK Historical Society...  I haven't looked for the film in a while.  I'd still love to see it, though, being a big Tilghman fan.

I'm with you Coal Creek as to Bill Tilghman. In fact, I don't believe that the man has gotten all the credit that he deserves IMHO. That's one man that I would like to have shared a campfire with. I sure would like to see that movie as well. I read some very interesting background on it in Michael Wallace's book about the 101 Ranch.

I happened to notice this related film.  I'll have to decide if it is worth the purchase price...

Very cool Griff.   Thanks so much for sharing.  Seems it would be well worth the 25 bucks.

I emailed the Southwestern Oklahoma Historical Society.  They don't have a copy of The Passing of the Oklahoma Outlaws.  The writer said that he isn't sure if a copy survived.

Griff:  I got mine from the Oklahoma State Historical Society in downtown OKC, not the SW Oklahoma State.  They had a copy at that time.  Give them a call.
