I've been trying to change my avatar and signature in my Forum Profile Information, but when I hit the "Change profile" button nothing happens.

Frenchie,  The usual problem when that occurs is that your avatar is too big of a file.  Check your file size and resize the file if it is too big.

Well, I hope I'll be forgiven for getting irritated over the fact that, if the problem is that the new avatar is too big, there's no error message that tells me so, other than the forum software just sitting there sucking its thumb and staring back at me. There's also nothing I can find that tells me the maximum allowed size of the avatar. In other words, how big is "too big"?

That is exactly what the software does.  It does not give you an error message.  I have been there and done that.  I believe the file size limit is 100 kb.

It's no great programming feat to return an error message if the file size is too big, including information about the max file size, which is also something that would be helpful to know before you try to upload an avatar to begin with. This is an example of the programmer not bothering to remember that what he knows is not shared by or obvious to the users. Where's the stinking Help page? A FAQ page? And the avatar I want to upload is much smaller than 100 KB.

I'll go see if I can get the Webmaster of this site to look at this thread.

Actually the forum software will size the image for you BUT if the image is too large it may time out while uploading if you have a slow or poor connection.  In addition to the file size if you go ahead and size your avatar down to 100 x 100 pixels it will upload much easier.   :)  If you don't know how to size it then post it here in an actual post and I will size it for you and send it back to you.  If you still have problems with the update after that then let me know via PM the changes that you want to make and I will be more than happy to do it for you.

The software is a package that Marshal has modified as far as look and layout.  I'm not sure if Marshal actually knows enough about coding to correct problems the actual writers of the software missed and given what he charges people to post here I doubt that he wants to pay someone else to do it.   ;)

Camille,  I just tried to upload a larger picture for my avatar and I got this error message.   It does not appear that the forum resizes the picture automatically.

My manners are atrocious lately. Camille and Don, your wise words are appreciated.

I just got off the phone with Verizon's Tech Support, and while they of course will not accept any blame or even admit that their lousy DSL comm program might have anything to do with it, they wouldn't go so far as to deny that a timeout protocol could be the culprit.

Camille, the avatar I'm trying to upload is 80 x 79 pixels and less than 8 Kbytes. I just suffered my usual tardy attack of intelligence - I'm going to try uploading one or three small, simple avatars and see what happens.

Frenchie,  Hey it worked.  Love the avatar.  lol

Well, it was a case of my same old way of not thinking something all the way through. The avatar I was trying to upload was small enough but I was trying to get it off my Photobucket account and not my 'puter. That should have been a major clue right off the bat, but of course my Holmes-like powers of observation zoomed right past that... anyway, once I copied the resized avatar back to my 'puter, it worked. Thanks for the help, and sorry for my denseness. Ya'll should be used to it by now.

Hmmm...I uploaded a 726 x 585 .bmp that is 1246 kb and it sized it down without a problem.  Maybe I get to use larger file sizes because of my mod status.
