Howdy, Pard,
If you are looking for a saddle scabbard, you may have to have one custom-made!  That ain't gonna be cheap, as it takes nearly a whole side of topgrain cowhide to make a descent one.  And that's for an UNLINED one.  As far as that goes, if you want one lined, you are better off with a layer of topgrain, veg-tanned cowhide (NEVER chrome-tanned leather!!!) lining, smooth side to the gun.  Wool linings will attract moisture like crazy!

But you can expect to pay at least $350-400 for a scabbard, and maybe more.  You may be able to get off cheaper if all you'd want would be a soft cover like the Indians or mountain men sometimes used.  But, again, avoid chrome-tanned leather like the plague!

Best of luck!
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

If you are looking for a standard saddle scabbard for use on horse back, I've been making these for years.  All of my patterns are cut from original period scabbards.  I have patterns for all of the barrel lengths that were originally available for the '76 rifle and I also have two styles for the 22" saddle ring carbine.  One style is for the commercial carbine and the other is a pattern taken from an original saddle scabbard used by the North West Mounted Police for the Mountie carbine.  A scabbard for your 28" rifle would run less than $200.00 and made from the finest oak tanned saddle skirting available in the US.

Adios,
Buck

Trailrider,   Any idea how Oklahoma Leather processes their leather.  I have several of their soft leather fringed rifle covers.  I dont store the rifles in them but I do transport them to and from the range.   Now you have me concerned.

I would recommend Buck's work.  He can make one for you and it will be correct for the 1876. :)

I had no idea they were one and the same.  Buck does make some great leather products and historically correct to boot.   I have heard nothing but excellent  reviews of Rick's work.

I've got to jump in with another recommendation for Buck's work—it is top-notch all the way.  I have had the great privilege to visit his shop and examine his work (as well as his extensive collection of original guns and leather) and I was highly impressed.  The holster and cartridge belt he made for me is one of my prized possessions.  I would absolutely recommend that you consider one of his scabbards.
