The first one that I bought from Cabelas had excessive play in the cylinder, due to a sloppy fit of the bolt in the frame. I took it back and exchanged it for another one, which had much better action and less "slop". My R&D conversion cylinder fits tight as a glove, too, so I'm much happier now. I'm looking forward to taking it to the next shoot, so I can make some smoke and thunder  with it...

Some times the lock up notches are a little narrow for the bolt on the conversion cylinders ..never had a problem with a 1858 Uberti ...but all my Pietta made Remmies had this problem ...a little stoneing on the bolt always made the fix . I know Pietta has come a long way with fit and finish ...but the internals are still lacking in quaility control.

Glad things worked out for ya. I'm looking forward to being able to take my "Deluxe" Pietta 1858 out and test it. I'm also waiting on an R&D and praying I have better luck than I did with the one I bought for my 1860 (ended up returning it to Midway). Yesterday was my day off, so I spent it porting my Uberti 1858 Navy for the Kirst Conversion I bought from River City John. Turned out great. Walt Kirst was kind enough to send me a paper template for the recoil shield. Used a set of cartridge rolls for head-porting on car engines that I had on my shelf. I also had to cut and ported the unported Kirst ring. All in all, it turned out real good. Still want to fabricate an ejection rod assembly and put some Ivory grips on it.

On another note, I think you will enjoy the Pietta. The quality is far better than years ago. In fact, I believe they now are nearly on par with Uberti and much better priced. I'm expecting a Pietta 1862 Police Colt in the mail today from Cabella's. I have a Kirst coming for it as well. I just love to tinker on these "old" guns.

Enjoy your 1858 NMA and give us a report soon.
