Howdy Gang,
I got a booklet on "Homemade Leather Tools" through a bunch out of Australia(Ramskull Press).  One of the tools it shows how to make is a Round knife.  It gives the recommended dimensions for overall, the tang, and from the edge(all in millimeters).  But for skiving and cutting leather, do I need a single or double bevel and what angle does the bevel need to be?  I'm getting ready to send a copy of the dimensions to a blacksmith(Arrowhead Forge) to see if he can make one for me(I've seen in the leather catalogs anywhere from $35 to the new ones Bob Dozier is going to make for $150-250 dollars).

I've never have either seen or worked with a round knife before, not sure how the edge is set up.

Thanks for the headsup, Ten Wolves(Nice to hear from a fellow wolf).
At that price, I'll probably look into the Stohlman brand.  The thing was, since I had some of the information from that pamphlet, just thought I'd see what I can have one made for.  (This gent at Arrowhead Forge only charges about $5-8 bucks per cutting edge of the blade depending on how shiny you want it).

Thanks for the tip-WolfWalker

Don't buy the ASB knife. The blade is too thick and won't hold an edge.
A head or round knife is something you don't want to skimp on. It is a dangerous tool and needs to be
razor sharp. If not you will fight it and that is when things go wrong.

Good advice there. I've been cut good by dull knives. I've ruined good pieces of leather with dull ones, too. In addition, the oils from leather get on the blade and cause it to drag. I keep a piece of belt leather handy with jeweler's rouge on it. Every few cuts or after a fairly long one, I strop the blade. That sharpens and cleans the oils off the blade. If there's any resistance when I make a cut, I strop it again.

Thanks for the information gang.

The main thing is that I'm trying to find out, are the edges on round knives beveled on one side or are the beveled on both?  And also what sort of angle would you want on the edge?  I'm wanting to see if I can have one custom made, but the article I have doesn't tell about the edge, it just gives dimensions.

Howdy
Both my Head and Round Knives are beveled on both sides. They also have a different angle. It depends
on the maker and how thick the steel is. I like both  knives. My Osborne is thinner but my Weaver holds
an edge longer, it also came ready sharp.
