This question isn't specific to Remingtons but what I am wondering is how to create a faux finish on the gun that makes it look "aged". I was thinking about bead-blasting the blueing but wasn't sure that would do the trick. Also, if you take off the bluing to go for that worn finish look is there a clear finish you can put on the metal to protect it? I live near Seattle and "in-the-white" finishes don't seem like that good of an idea up here in the North Wet :)

I've seen a couple of sites that advertise different types of finish but I don't want to spend too much on that. Heck I'll just use them till they look old if I have to....LOL

There are several ways... don't bead blast !

1. Birchwood Casey Blue remover ( instant removal )
2. Naval Jellie ( instant removal )
3. my favorite White Vinagar

BC will remove the blue and frequent wipe downs with a oilly rag or WD40 with keep in the white in time it will gray some.

Naval Jellie will remove the blue and leave a graying patina , however the treament leaves a 2-3 thousands barrier that will ward off rust but also any future Blue or Browning you might want to add.

Ah ...White Vinagar...  slower to remove the finish,  however this means control on how much or how little you want to remove.
if you choose this one you can leave a bit bluing around natural non wearing areas.
you can also use some browning ( also Birchwood casey ) and card in some browing over the remainingg blue....
as I said this is my favorite,  when I defarbed guns...
it's very forgiving...

BTW ...all methods require at some point drench with cold water to delute and to stop the process.

Just carry it, use it and clean it.

The finish will wear naturally from doing so, and from normal handling, it will look 'right' as opposed to 'artificially aged'.

Remember - given the era you represent - the piece is supposed to be new or 'newer' - and not show 100 years of poor storage, rust and detritus.

I took the blueing off this one with white vinegar about a year ago , After I shoot it and clean it I oil the frame with WD40 ..never a rust problem , and I like the look .

Your gun looks great, you did a nice job of removing the blueing, did the blueing just come off after soaking the gun in white vinegar, or did you have to work it over with steel wool, i'd be interested in kmowing, i really like the look and after a year your gun , like you say doesn't show any signs of staining or rust . I think this makes it look really antique, and period. thanks for sharing pard. ::) :o 8)
