Yesterday, at the outdood flea market I was at a guy's table, he didn't have anything I wanted, but I don't like my chezzies wooden mallet, and he had a new rubber mallet, but he said it was made out of plastic, it has a white head but it is plyable, he just gave to me, new in plastic, Will it WORK or NOT untill I buy a leather mallet?? It weighs about 4 times my wooden one!

Ace, you will just have to try it. If you get bounce back I wouldnt use it, as it might give you a double impression. Otherwise, if it makes good impressions, you could use anything you have at hand. I use a small moly headed Al S. hammer, as well as a large ASB leather maul. I use the small moly hammer for most work. DM

DM, Thank you for the answer, I think you are right, I think it will bounce!! but when I ask the guy for a price he said just take it!! So if nothing else, I can use it on my head or hand when my cack starts killing me, I have found if you cause a pain somewhere else, the other pain doesn't hurt so bad :o :o :)

Thank you

I used a regular rubber mallet for a little while, and couldnt figure out what was wrong. Wasnt until I got a rawhide hammer found that I figured it out. You should still give it a try on some scrap. It may be your dream hammer. Good luck. DM ;D

Dalton is right about bounce back giving a double impression so careful with it until you've tried it well on some scraps. Other than that, whatever works is appropriate.

I don't like to use steel hammers on my tools because over time they can tend to trash the impact end but that's just preference. My favorites are the rawhide mallets but I also use some other deadblow hammers for heavy hits either stamping or punching holes. I've been tempted to try a wooden one just to see how I like it. I do use steel for setting rivets.

You guys are right, the mallet does bonce, so it save the money and get a raw hide? I don;t know where i saw this, but A guy had took oak 2x2 he turned doen a handle on a wood lathe and wrapped it with lrather, looked liked it was doing a good job, i might try that.

I f you're looking for a rawhide mallet I have one you can have.  Close to 35 years old, may not be worth a hoot any more.  Made by Garland in Saco, Maine.

I need an address to send it to.
