Unusual?  Not too much.  It does happen more than some folks think, but the general concept of snow in one of the warmest desert areas in the States is strange.

It has been snowing here in the Las Vegas Valley for about two hours, now, and the roof shingles on my shop are losing their individuality - the stuff is starting to stick.  This phenomenon may continue for up to a couple of days, in the most unusual case, but more likely, not more than a few hours.  Of course, the mountains around the valley have had the white stuff on them for several days, already.

Welcome to the club (fellow Founding Father) :).  We started getting dumped on again this morning up here in Roop County.  Talked to Dick (the county range master), and no one's been into our part of the range since last weekend's snow.  We got 8 more inches so far, and it's supposed to keep up through Sunday.  :o :o For the first time in over 10 years, we're going to cancel a shoot. >:( :P :'(

The ironic thing is, this is what I moved from the High Sierras to get away from.  We always got some up there, even where we were, in the mid-foothills, at 3000 ft.; we would get two or three, or more storms a season, that would leave us with several inches to several feet of the nasty stuff.  Two weeks after we closed escrow on this place, it dumped about six inches here; now, this year, here it is, again.  Ah, but just wait for another six months; it'll be 115 in the shade, and a bit of cool might feel pretty good.  I ain't complainin' though, just grousing.  ;D :D ;)

Woke up to snow and it hasn't stopped all day here in the PNW. My dogs love it. My english setter was lying out in the backyard on the snow a while ago then her and my springer had to have a game of tag.
All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream. -- T.K. Whipple

I'm sure glad it doesn't snow all that often here.  When it does...this place almost shuts down.  The freeways become parking lots; towing companies do land office business pulling the damned Yups and their all wheel drive vehicles out of ditches...while those of us with two wheel drive go by and laugh at them!  People go nutzo here when it snows.  One inch of snow on the ground and they all start to chain up.  Some don't even know which end of the car to put the chains on!  It gets to be a real circus when that yukky white stuff comes in.

Well, our Friday rain turned out to be Friday snow, a few inches of it.  Was nice, considering we just set a record for rainfall for the first 5 days of January - over 5.5 inches, enough to put the Mississippi, Missouri, Merimac and all the other streams in the area over flood stage.  This may be a big snow year like 1982 was.
