R&D cylinder problem?

Howdy,
I just received my R&D conversion cylinder for my new Pietta '58.  I haven't used it yet, but while playing around with it the hammer will not go past 1/2 cock at times.  Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't.  Is there a problem, or is this normal?

It could be a problem.  Dont be afraid to pull the hammer back with some gusto.  Sometimes if you treat it too gingerly you will have that problem.   I have had past issues with the RandD cylinders that can only be fixed by "tweaking" the fit.  As I have said in other posts,  if you buy your gun and conversion cylinder from Taylors ask the gunsmith to fit the cylinder to the gun you are buying.  They do this without charge.  Make sure you ask them to do it at the time you are placing your order.  Regards.  Deadeye.

I`ve had conversion cylinder problems on my new Remingtons ..but seems never a problem on my older ones ..These 1858 Copys are tight when new ...they do improve with age , uasually after about 300 rounds , things loosen up . They will make a kitchen table gun smith out of ya for sure ...stoneing and smoothing the internals helps alot ....My new Uberti`s  came pretty slick functioning ..but my earlyer Pietta models were very rough ...I`ve heard Pietta has improved theirs lately ..I ordered a new Pietta from Cabelas last week , because of a sale ..so I`ll soon see how much improvement has been made .

I had the same problem with a new Uberti '58 Navy and new R&D cylinder. It appears the notches on the new cylinder back plate were not cut as deep as on an older one I have for ny Uberti '58 Army. When I switched the back plates (they are interchangable) the problem dissapeared.

When I first tried a new R&D cyl. in my Uberti NMA, the outer knurled edge of the R&D backplate would rub on the inside of the frame and prevent smooth cocking, so I had to use a dremel tool grinder to relieve the area where it was rubbing, but only slightly. This may or may not be your problem , but worth checking to see if it is binding in the frame. Good luck... ;)

I had trouble with mine as well...did the same as yours and the cylinder went on the cylinder pin real tight. First, remove the blue from the cylinder pin and after you do that make sure you have plenty of lube on the cylinder pin....olive oil works great...you can get it from any dollar store as well as the super market. I got this info from Halfway Creek Charlie...it solved the problem...these R&D cylinders can fit tight on Remy's. My Remy is a Pietta as well....good luck.

I also had to relieve the frame on two of my Ubertis. One was hard to get the cylinder pin through completely until it was relieved. This isn't a problem with the R&D cylinder, it has to do with how much Uberti takes off the frames at the botom of the cylinder opening.

My R&D just came in for my year old Cabela's Pietta.  At first the cylinder pin would not go in at all, so I measured it and the hole.  Looked OK, so after some fiddling, I worked the pin inside, but only half way as you mentioned, Marshal.  I finally got it on but it would bind.  Next, I forced it as suggested by Deadeye and it started to work flawlessly...  Then I removed it...  I think I need to bring out the polishing tools.
;D

It seems the more I work it, the more it works, so I'm confident that I'll be ready to shoot soon.

Regarding the issues already mentioned:

-There doesn't seem to be any issue with the back plate/frame except that the tolerances are tight with the firing pins fully extended.

-The bottom of the cylinder opening seems fine with the exception of some burrs around the trigger guard screw holes.

New questions:

-There doesn't seem to be an overabundance of clearance between the barrel and the front of the cylinder.  Just the tiniest of slivers of light shines through.  I'm wondering if this will present a problem with black powder.  Any advice?

-Two of the firing pins (on opposing sides) sit snugly in their holes.  One much more so than the other.  I can easily push it in and out with my fingers, but the others slide on their own.  Is this an issue?

Thanks for any advice!

Just got a new R&D and uberti NMA in today, cleaned it up and put about 100 rounds through it.  The R&D cylinder was defenatly tight, and would bind enough while cycling to make me finish rotating the cylinder a couple of times and to make sure it was fully engaged on the bolt.  After the first 4-5 cylinderfulls it got a lot better, towards the end it was functioning almost flawlessly.  I figure the virgin steel of the frame needed a little stressing and stretching and didn't want to take any metal off that I didn't have too.  The cylinder barrel gap was tinny, and is still very tight, but I ran a couple of cylinders of black powder through it with no problems.  Maybe extended shooting when you pull the cylinder just rub a little lube on the pin before re-inserting.  So far I'm tickled with mine.
