Whats your favorite shift? Mine has to be 1500 - 2300 I can get things done during the day and still sleep at night like a human.  The older I get the more i realize we were not meant to stay up all night. Days 0700 - 1500 are ok Im not an early riser but getting done at 3pm is nice.

Punched 'afternoons'.  That was 1900 to 0300 for me.  Sunday and Monday off.

I had a strange career for most cops.  Between Forgery 'n I.A.D., I spent about twelve of thirty two working straight days.

Edit to add I hated 1600 to 2400.....

worked most of the time daylight, one allnight shift, didn't like it at all.

during the time I was a bail bondsman it was just 24 on when somebody called, just 2 hours a day somewhere I had to be, from 2 to 4 afternoon, court arrainments.  got calls all hours get up at midnite go write a bond, get back home get a call at 2 go get somebody else. some weekend nights just stay down at the jail all night long. but I made in a night what I would have made in a month keeping them odd hours. so I just put up with it till I got enough money to get into something a little calmer.

Most of my first 13 years was spent on evenings and nights.  My wife and I had our wedding rehearsal on Friday night, got married on Saturday night, and went back on duty Sunday night. Most of the last 23 years has been spent on Days.  The Day shift for me drags on, the evening shift goes by fast, and the night shift is the "fun" shift. It's a time when all the little creatures come out of the woodwork to play. Even after 36 years in Law enforcement, I still would not want to do anything else.

Swing shift 1700 to 0300 4 ten hour shifts was my element.  Probably about 2/3 of my career was there.  The rest mostly graveyard.

I hated day shift patrol (0700 to 1700) almost as much as 1100 to 2100 cover (read "day waster") shift.

Days were OK when I was in detectives, though every 4th week I was on 24 hour call and worked a lot of nights and OT.

In 15 years, between 3 departments, I have spent about 8 months on day shift and hated every minute of it... Way to much traffic. I have worked about an equal number of years split between Graves and Swings, but I prefer the call volume, types of calls and freedom of Graves much more than swings... I just hate being opposite of everyone else with the sleeping habits of a graveyard shifter...

I always liked the 1300-2300 patrol shift--it went by fast because we were so busy.  I worked a special unit for a while that pretty much set our own hours, which worked pretty well too, although it was hard to make personal plans because we never knew what shift we were working next week; it depended on what the criminals were doing.  Now that I'm a detective, I work a steady 0900-1800 shift with every Saturday and Sunday and every-other Friday off.  It is kind of nice to feel like a normal person for once.

My favorite shift was 1900 to 0300 odd beats or 2000 to 0400 even beats cover unit shift on patrol.  We had Plenty of calls to keep you busy and no senior command staff to micro manage.  Our overlapping watch commanders 1600 to 2400 and 2400 to 0800 were both great to work for.

I used to love the graveyard shift 2200-0600 but after I hit 45 I got a promotion and started working straight days. We had an emergency when i was about 53 and I had to work a 12hr night watch with about 3 hours notice. It nearly killed me. Too old for them, used to thrive on them. Liked the early starts, 0600-1400, hard getting going ith ice on the ground in the morning, but you ended up with a lot of day to yourself.

We run 12 hour shifts.  I am Sgt. and shift supervisor for the my shift.  I come on at 1730 and check the count and make sure things are somewhat smooth from the day shift.  Brief my shift and get to work.  I like it because the brass has already gone home and we are playing mop up from the day shift.  I do not have to deal with all the politics that go on during the day.

Night shift is the best shift for detention.  Hopefully the "Children" are in their bunks until breakfast and the "Brass" is home.

I started at the S.O. in 1971 on the overnight and worked it for the next seven years. I did "progress" to 1600-0000 after 10 years, but never liked it as much as overnight. When I made Captain in 1989 the boss told me he wanted 40 a week out of me and he didn't care when I did them. Most of the summer hours were from 2000-0400 and in the colder days I did 1700-0100. I did get stuck on a few early shifts, but as soon as I could come up with a reasonable excuse I took myself off those. I worked traffic every day of the 25 years...never interested in investigations or admin. After I retired in 1995 I moved to New Hampshire in 2000 and now work as a Supervisor 1 in emergency communcations at the The NH Dept of Safety. I'll be vested in 2 years and I'll retire again and STAY retired. Now, all my hours are daytime hours and I am starting to like them. When I retire this time all of my spare time is going to be Cowboy shooting and fishing.

I guess I'm still young enough to like the midnight shift. We do 12 hour shifts, long nights but there are no "white shirts" around.

Afternoon Swing shift was my favorite.

But, we mostly had rotational Swings and Mids...3 swings/3 Mids/3 days off.  (that was the normal rotation)  One Flight had straight day shifts (0600-1400 hrs)...didn't care for that much.
