Larger grips for the Pre War

Not very sure if this forum will be right for that question. I'm a beginner in SAA shooting and also green in CAS City.

I own a pair of Pre War in .45 Colt since a couple of months. I love these guns, they are amazing but I was surprised that the grips are so airy.

Somewhere I have read in the last days that Colt had supplied some of his cap and ball sixshooters in the 1860's with a larger grip. Later on, when the peacemaker had appear, some people with big hands did change the grips to get more comfort.

Is it possible to change the grips between USFA PreWar and those guns I mentioned before? Do USFA offer such a replacement set?  ???

William,
In a word, no.  What you are referring to is the difference in the grips between the Colt 1851 Navy  and the Colt 1860 Army.  The 1860 had larger grips.  Most of the "conversions" that you see are the reverse of what you are looking for.  People wanted the smaller, 1851 style grips on the 1860 model.  The 1851 was much more popular than the 1860, that is why Colt duplicated the 1851 style grips on the 1873 model P.
I suppose you could try fitting a Uberti 1860 grip to a USFA frame but I seriously doubt if you are going to find one that will come close to fitting.  Before even considering that I would try something simple, like thicker grips.

About stocks...

I have 3 USFA guns.  #1 is apparently a transitional USFA with an Italian frame.  The one-piece walnut stocks we can call "medium" in size because...

#2 is a recently produced USFA with the factory plastic ("rubber") stocks.  These are the thinnest of the three guns.  Then there is...

#3 which is a Henry Nettleton SA with one piece walnut stocks (or stock I suppose).  These stand a bit proud of the frame by about 1/16" all the way around (but not at the back, fore or bottom strap, just at the frame).  IOW, they are much fuller and you can tell by feel which is which.

I should think that this last is what you're looking for and I'm sure USFA can provide it.
Sincerely,

Hobie
