Howdy. Heres the two holsters I started friday night and worked on until wee hours in the morning. They are for my 4 5/8" Rugers , but made them for a 5 1/2" for aesthetics and eye appeal. I used Wills Cheyenne pattern, and come close to a pattern in Packing Iron, and added the spots. Need to make a belt yet, but am gonna work on that this week.
Question: I used Fiebings Oil Med. Brown, then Med. Brown antique paste. What can I put over the top, or do I need anything? I have never put anything over the top before, cuz its like shoe polish to begin with.

Great Job Dalton  ;D ;D

Nice work Pard , I love the color, and the mules foot border on the main body, and you got your Makers Stamp on there too, the medium brown in an oil dye , came out looking deep and rich , Don't ya just love Will Ghromelys patterns , there just right on, your arrangment of spots also looks good , they look like they might be brass , you talk about if you should put anything over the top , you can ask Cowboy WC about Skidmores Leather Cream, this is really good stuff , and WC swears by it , I use it my self , and find it gives me that natural finish I like, but ask WC I'm sure he will have more to say about it, also your pictures came out nice , I like the arrangement , looks like something out of Packing Iron don't ya know , Thanks for sharing Dalton , this is a job well done for sure .  ;) :D ;D :o ::) 8)

Dalton,
Ten Wolves Hit It Right On The Head!! Those are sweat looking :)
I was wondering if most of you folks make the Skirt style holsters more than the non?
I hope to show you guys my first pair some time this week!Mostly like at the end of the week, so you all will have something to laugh about all weekend long! I didn't go with a skirt style, and since i was using scrap leather that I bought I made them both cross draw with a good deal of angle, i was doing these as a practice for my open tops. I made my own pattern using the instruction out of Al's book, but I learn something, he tells you to trace out your gun both sides and widen it 3/4 all the way around. Next one I make I am going to go a full 1", because i had to put in 1/4" spacer, and it is still going to be tight.

Did it again  :-[I didn't mean to take away your Thunder Dalton! I do realy like those holsters.

I use Fiebings Antique Finish/Paste quite a lot and have found that is does need a good seal.  Tan-Kote or Bag-Kote seems to work well for me, applied in two light coats. Satin Sheen also works well, but I don't care for the look and I find it harder to apply without streaking.

If you put the Antique Paste on the back (rough-out) side of the flap then it will rub off like crazy on your cloths unless you do something.  I have found that a coat of Gum Tag, followed by Tan-Kote or Bag-Kote will prevent most of this.

I have also found that I have better results if I let the paste dry for 24 hours before applying any top coat.

YMMV

BTW Tan-Kote may be used as a thinner/reducer for Fiebings Antique Finish/Paste if you ever need to lighten some.

Thanks for the compliments gents. Bag Kote is on my list of things to get next time Im at the shop. I did try satin shene on the inside of the loop just to see, and yes it did streak badly. Took a little bit of cussing and rubbing to get it back to pretty. Thanks all. DM

I used this process on these so you can see the outcome.  They appear to have an adequate seal as I have been wearing them around the house without noticeable bleeding or rubbing off of the Antique Paste.

I have used this same process on any number of holsters (mostly concealed carry stuff) and never had much problem with it. The Antique Paste does take some time to dry, particularly where it is thicker, like in the tooling. Like I mentioned I'd give it 24-48 hours before attempting to apply the sealing.

IMO Bag-Kote gives you a little brighter finish than Tan-Kote.  IIRC Bag-Kote is water based, while Tan-Kote is resin based.

I have used the antique paste since I started leather a few years ago, and have never noticed any rub off, but then I dont put it on the back of the holster. I used it from the get go as a final finish due to the high luster I could polish out of it. Just now I am wondering what can go over the top or if its needed. Thanks again gents. DM

Those look great, Dalton. I like the way you made the border with the mule foot and the veiner. It looks like you did a nice trick with the veiner inside the border also. Good job, pard. Those spots look good on them, also. ;)

Howdy All
Tan-Kote, Bag-Kote and Satin Sheen are all mate finishes. They all work, Satin sheen on paste antique will streak.
As 10W said, I'm a Skidmore's Leather Cream nut. I find it to be one of the best finishes I've ever used. It was not
Meant to be a finish, It is a conditioner. But the bee's wax in it make a great finish, It can be rubbed to a nice shine.
It's a great water repellent. Also Angules Shoe dye company makes a Leather Balm that is great.

Alrighty, had the belt done now for a week or so, but havent had a chance to post pics.
Used a roll stamp and Wills brass buckle to match the brass spots! My gear always has brass, and my wifes is nickel, that way its easy to tell who has what gear. DM

Howdy Dalton,

Beautiful job on that rig! Great job on the stamping. I love the rich color you put on there. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
