I took this photo of the last standing tree marking the spot where a troop of 9th Cavalry under the command of Capt. Beyer was attacked by Apaches led by Victorio on 29 May 1879. It is a remote place in the Black Range Moutains just east of the continental divide. Then it might have also been called the Mimbres Mountains.

After the battle when the troopers returned to bury their dead they carved a cross in 3 or 5 trees, the number of crosses is lost to time. Only the one remains standing intact and I oil it occasionally to help preserve it. Pvt. Frank Dorsey is one man's name that was killed there. Sgt. Thomas Boyne won the Medal of Honor for his actions there and at another battle in the Cuchillo Mountains several miles east in September of 1879. Sgt. Thomas Boyne grave is back east and can be seen on FindaGrave.com

If anyone has more knowledge of or a good book to refer to this battle please share that.
thanks,
