Are you talking 40 grain VOLUME EQUIVALENT  or 40gr BY WEIGHT? I would not try to shoot 40grs 777 in your Remington in either case. The gun could probably handle it but it is more powerful than Pyro or BP. Some of the subs (APP) get a lot higher pressures when overly compressed. The reason you could get 40grs of Pyro into your Remmie is because Pyro is highly compressible. You can get about 35grs of FFFg into one also. 35grs 777 in a Remington is gonna really kick and hammer the gun. DO NOT TRY THAT HIGH OF A LOAD IN A COLT! At least one barrel assembly on a Walker has been sent down range with a full chamber of 777 and a round ball on top. A Colt would likely shoot loose with a steady diet of full chamber loads of 777. I do not use it in my revolvers. I use it in my 357 mag rifle rounds.
If given the choice between Pyro and 777 I would opt for the 777 as it can't be any harder to ignite than Pyro (although I have not used 777 in the C&B to be certain of that) and it would be far less corrosive with far less fouling. You could shoot 25grs 777 and have the equivalent of a 30gr BP load which is plenty stout. A 30 gr load of 777 might be fine for hunting purposes but not for a match. Stick to 20-25grs vol of 777 and you'll likely be quite happy.

I would go with the Triple 7 as it is much less fouling than Pyrodex, plus it is 15% more powerful than it as well.  Their website will give you load information, and yes, 40 grains of Triple 7 is way too much for your '58.  I found that 22 grains by volume to be the most accurate load in my '58 using pyrodex, so I suggest you start with 18-19 grains of 777 and work up from there.

Sound advice already given...
I shoot about 22-24 grains of 2F 777 in my '58's all the time, with no problems. Great accuracy and pretty mild recoil. Cleans up with hot water and a tooth brush. Make sure you lube the heck out of the cylinder pin and you shouldn't have any problems shooting a whole match without cleaning the gun.

Marshall,
Do you have any problem with ignition using 777? I have had delayed ignition with Pyrodex but none with the one time I used CLEARshot.

Why not try the "real stuff" ? . . . I started with Pyrodex as it was the only thing sold around here.  The attended the gunfight behind the Jersey Lilly and won a can of Goex 2f.   Quite a difference.   Pyrodex is black powder treated to make it more stable so that it is classed as a propenant rather than an explosive. But it is messier and more corrosive than black powder.   Lots of areas have no one carrying black powder due to the regulations on storage.  Same around here. I just get 5 lbs at a time from Powder Inc.  Just my $ .03 if of any worth to ya.

Good shootin', . . . whatever ya choose to shoot . . .  :)
Beware the man with one gun, he probably knows how to use it.

Hell Gate... I use remmington #10 caps with both the stock nipples and a newly installed set of Treso nipples and have neve had a problem using 777 in my guns.

Thanks, Marshall Tac, I'll give it a try.
