Been hammering out some more leather goods for the CAS...

These pictures are not the greatest...The lighting was off...but here are some updates to the rig I have been building

Now I'm In the process of building a Shotshell belt...

While I'm at it...I have been thinking about making some leather suspenders...thinking I'll use a 4 or 5 oz weight.

One question comes to mind...are these lined or left rough on the back?...I'm going to line my shotshell belt with suede, so how would this be for the suspenders?

Another project I'll be working on is some reloading strips...only one question here..how many does a fella need..?

I was thinking of making 3 strips that have loops back to back....that would be thirty rounds of ammo..plus with the shotshell belt I'm going to put on another 10 loops for rifle cartridges.

any opinions?

Looks good, pard. I take it that the logo on the cuffs is in keeping with your alias. Cool.

Nice looking cuffs.  You mention the suspenders.  I have seen them both ways...lined and unlined.  Just remember that they will be against your shirt so be careful as to what dye you use...Personally I would not put anything on the inside of the suspensers.

Outrider...let me clarify...when you say "nothing" on the inside would that include any dye as well...I was kinda worried about the dye releasing...

Howdy TW...been working on it...Put a 25' cant just to be on the safe side....no lawbreaker here.. ;)

How about the loading strips...what do you guys think 3 or 4...or more? ???

WOW Hank, you are moving right along.  Everything looks great pard.

Now for my real thouhgts on those loading strips.  Like most, I used them for several years but never was totally sold on them.  It seemed that except for allowing the rounds to be stripped on a table surface, they were still the same process as going from the belt.  By the way, most fokes seem to have one, or one each, for the different ammo configurations they might use rather than loading up enough for a full match.

The concept that I have fallen in love with for match use are the ones made from wood and leather.  Particularly I like the ones that push the rounds up when the loading block is placed on a table.  Mine are almost square and have four rows of five rounds.  These can be charged quickly at the cart and rounds quickly transferred to the guns at the loading table without struggling with loops.  My block is tethered to the small pouch, in which it rides while charged, and at the unloading table my sooty bp cases can be dropped into the pouch.

I still see enough cowboys out there, using the strips, to prove their lasting popularity though.

You know Bob....I saw a couple of different examples of these....I hadn't heard anyone one speak of them before this...but I see your point about the "card" seems to make pretty good sense....

Darn it...now look what you've done....gonna have to make some of those too.... ;)

If you get a chance...sure would like to see a pic of that set up your using..... ;)

Hank:

By "nothing" I meant no oil or dye, stain or whatever...otherwise it will be all over your clothes...Know quite a few fellows who have ruined good shirts and pants because of dye

They all look great. I like the logo on the cuffs.

No probably about it. Outrider just did you a good turn. I bought a pair of brown suspenders that were dyed on the back. Damn near ruined one of my best shirts. It took a looooong time to get the dye out of the shirt after one wearing. I sealed those suspenders with a 5-1 water/Mop-n-Glow floorwax solution then wore them with garbage shirts until they stopped bleeding, over a year later. Even today, I don't wear them with a good shirt.

Hey Hank! Nice looking work there Pard, very impressive!

Regarding suspenders - I used 4oz veg tanned tooling leather for mine. I kept them unlined, but I did burnish the flesh side of the leather using beeswax and a coarse cloth. I am very happy with the results considering this was the first time I ever attempted suspenders and I had no pattern to work with, I just came up with a plan and executed it. Some pictures are posted below (they are a little large so I just linked them);

You're very welcome! I think you'll be pleased with hand made leather suspenders as I think they feel very authentic :)
