Unique cal.50 rifle

Joseph G. Bilby wrote in his book 'A Revolution in Arms A History of the First Repeating Arms':

In January 1865 the board eventually tested sixty-five rifles and carbines,including the Henry rifle and the Spencer carbine and rifle.
.....Another Spencer submission was a unique .50 caliber rifle with a a rifle-musket-length thirty-nine-inch barrel categorized as a 'single loader with magazine cut-off'.
The details of the longer barreled gun are unfortunately lost to history.

Did anyone knew more about this unique rifle?

I wonder if there is an error in the original records--why would you need a magazine cutoff in a single-shot weapon?
