OK fellows, I got the basics down and am now ready to learn how to carve, anyone have preference for a good book on learning to carve the western type stuff ?...Al stohlman ? maybe ?

St. George

Al Stohlman's fine book -  'Learn to Carve Leather' - is a good place to start learning.

You can get it from Tandy's - www.tandyleatherfactory.com

Their price is $12.99.

Good Luck.

I'll second the above recommendation.

Just get every "beginner" book on leather carving, tooling & stamping as well as "How to Hand Sew Leather". I have 4 beginners books total, and with them alone I feel I have all the essential basic knowledge needed to work leather and craft belts, holsters and the like.
See me takin' shots at the bar like I'm bullet-proof.

I also agree with "Learn to Carve Leather". Al Stohlman's books are easy to follow. You don't even have to be able to read to get what he's telling you.

Howdy Folks,

I have the book, "Sheridan Style Carving" by Bill Gardner & Clinton Fay.  If you are interested in the Sheridan style, this is an excellent step by step book.  It would be a good project after you have the basics.  Great pictures in the book as well.

Happy Trails,

Books are good but there are a lot of videos and DVD's also. Hidecrafter carries a good selection.
