Issues with my Richards Transition model

My first issue was that the ammo rims were hangin up. I have not tested it yet after backing the wedge out some. But I am noticing some sort of rubbing still when turning the cylinder. I think the front edge of the cylinder is rubbing somethimes on the frame. I noticed some blueing has been rubbed or scratched off. Also since backing the wedge out I think the barrel is a little loose. I can feel something move when shaking the gun side to side a little. All in all I am disappointed in the quality of the new Richards Type II Transition model. I have an Open Top and a Richards Mason conversion the quality is great on them. I expected the same quality. Any other pards experiancing these issues? Not sure if I want to send it back because it took so long to get it but may have too. I do not know of any local gunsmiths that works with the open tops that I can trust to work on it. What do you pards think?

Pappy, you say the rims were hanging up.  Does that mean the cylinder turns fine when empty?  You shouldn't have to loosen the wedge for this (for too tight of a cylinder to barrel gap maybe, but not for headspace).  Check to see if the loading gate is protruding slightly forward, leaving a ridge for the cartridge rims to hit.  I have seen some Richards-Masons that had this problem and needed to have this ridge filed down a bit.

As for something rubbing on the cylinder, I'm not sure if you mean on the front of the cylinder (this would be the back of the barrel rubbing on the cylinder from the wedge being in too tight) or if you mean on the side of the cylinder near the front.  If it is on the side, take off the cylinder and look at the frame.  Check to see if Uberti used too long of a screw to secure the trigger/bolt spring, which could cause the end of the screw to protrude through the frame and rub the cylinder.

Good luck.

Go here and scroll down go the pictures.  I can pretty much guarantee your arbor is to short.  Only solution to getting it tuned properly is to fill the gap with a spacer.  There are different ways to do it, but until you have the barrel-frame gap correct, you'll never get the other problems resolved.

Pettigogger I do not see the pictures. And yes I meant the egde of the cylinder is rubbing on the frame where it is concave. It was rubbing on the back of the barrel when I first got it and rotated the cylinder. I did nothing with it before I took it out to shoot. I have not shot it since adjusting the wedge. But since I backed it off a little I think the barrel is a little loose. I feel something move when I shake the gun side to side. I am talking with Cimarron also. THey have asked for the serial number and model number of my gun. Anyone know why they would ask for this?

Pappy Hayes

Thank you Pettifogger. I checked for the arbor problem and if I did it right mine seems to be ok. I checked for a too long of screw and it is fine. Howerver I noticec when I slide the cylinder onto the arbor I can feel it drag on the frame. Can the arbor be bent? I looks like it angles down a little as it comes out to the front of the gun.

Pappy, sometimes the water table (the bottom part of the inside of the frame) has burrs & high spots. I had to stone one of mine lightly. Also, LIGHTLY stone the edges of the frame. That should fix it. Be sure to stone the areas on the frame that correspond with marks on the cylinder.

I am shipping it back to Cimarron to look at it. THank you all your suggestions. I do not have the tools or the know how like the rest of you pards to do the things you suggested. I hope they can resolve the issues and it does not take long.

Fox Creek Kid

Pappy, give a heads up to Abilene here on STORM as he helped me a lot and is a stand up fella. Cimarron did good by me.  ;)

Pappy Hayes

Hey Fox Creek Kid, does Abilene work for Cimarron?

Fox Creek Kid

Abilene is really Bill Gates....................just kiddin'!!  ;D  PM sent to you Pappy.  ;)

Abilene

Bill Gates, eh?

I wish I had his money and my good looks.  Well, his money anyway.

Pappy, I'm working at Cimarron a couple days a week during downtime from my other job.  I'd probably be there more but it is 100 miles from my house.

I'm not a gunsmith but I can fix some things.  I'll certainly take a look at your gun when I can.  Part of the crew is off to Shot Show for a week.  Sometimes guns have to go to an outside gunsmith for repair.  Hopefully yours won't need that.
