Engraved 1866...should I?

So I walked into the local candy store today, and they had a '66 in there. Looks unfired, chambered in 44/40 with pretty nice engraving on the action and barrel. Looked to be a 24 inch tube. Wood looked real nice. It was marked $995. Assuming I can get it down $100-150, do you guys think it's worth it?

Is it real engraving or the photo engraving that is done on commemoratives? If it's true engraving that isn't a bad price since that alone is from $200 and up.

What barrel lenght and style (oct or round- rifle or carbine) does it have, this will also dictate the the value, Most used ones in the area here are $8/900. You can search them out on the web for less

Well the real engraving is cut into the metal and you can feel it as well as see it. The photo engraved is just printed on and doesn't remove any metal.

I have seen some nicely done photo engraving but it still is pretty obvious and not at all period correct. Still if you like it and can get it for a price you can afford go for it.

Ok Will, I went and took a look at it again this afternoon. It is indeed real engraving (fairly deep into the brass) and there isn't even a hint of it being fired. The carrier block was without a trace of powder or tarnish. I think I can get it for $875. What say you?

Heck - even the photo-engraved ones will be worth/cost more than that - even in "used" condition! (I said "worth" - I didn't say I'd want one!

But real engraving? You bet!)

As already mentioned, run - don't walk!

Lit'l Rooster said HIS price in Virginny. Around here in Hoosier Land, it's be $1250 - $1350 ... or more! (In the condition you mentioned with real engraving)
