Howdy. I was bored today so I finally got around to trying out a pattern from Mr. Ghormley's West Texas collection. I figured that seeing as how I recently moved from North Carolina to Texas I needed me a Texas style holster. I don't usually line my holsters, mainly because I have to hand stitch and I am just plain lazy. I did decide to line this one because I knew I was only going to be making one. The dye job on this holster is terrible. I guess I got in a hurry and wasn't really paying attention to what I was doing. My dye jobs are normally better than this but oh well it was just a project holster. I think other than the dye being so bad the rest of the dang thing turned out ok. What do ya'll think?

Hey Pard

You don't have anything to feel bad about , you did an excellant job on this holster , the dye looks fine and you did a real nice job of tooling. Will Ghormley puts out some great patterns  8), I know , I use his stuff too  ;D

Bull,
I am going to agree with Ten Wolves, That Holster is AWESOME :o :o By looking at that holster is it a cross draw? or bottom angled forward to be a fast draw? And maybe it was the way I was looking at it!
I am still waiting on my book I bought to start learning, I was wondering about how many sq. ft. of leather do you have in a holster like that.
Thanks

Ace, if you are starting with a nice flat piece of leather that has no waste at edges, a piece of one foot by two foot will normally make a large full skirted holster.  Problem is, the skirts angle can wreak havoc with this as an absolute statement on a perfect rectangle.

I really like the Ghormley patterns and have made several holsters from them.  My current set of Slim Jims were actually patterned from his Cheyenne series, with the skirt removed.

That's a great holster, Bull. I like the tooling job on it. Not only that, but there are times I choose to do that type of dye job so the holster has a more classic look to it, as though it had been in use for years but still cared for to keep it in good servicable condition. I like it. It could've come right out of a page in packing iron. It would look great with a pistol that has an antiqued finish on it.

Howdy Bull
You got nothing to hang your head about. That holster has a great look. I often buff my dye before it has
dried completely so it has some marbling to look used but cared for.

Bob,
Thank you so much for the info on about how much leather I would need to make a holster. I got my "How To Make Holsters" book today! got some of my tools, and got to get a couple more!
What is "Ghormley patterns " & Skirks? I haven't had time to hardly look at it, but I will tonight.

I apoligize for asking all the dumb question, I can fix guns, when my brother and I had our body shop I could cut a car in half and then cut another car in half, and put the 2 good halfs back, and you would never know.I think I can build holstes if I get the concept, but I will never be able to carve.
Thanks for the help!!

Bull   I had a custom maker make a holster for me back in 1990,I wanted a antqued finnish. What he was able to do looks just like the finnish you did and I love that look,as cowboy wc said not new but well cared for,or as I refer to it antquied. That custom holster cost a pile of bucks and your finnish looks identicle, I LOVE IT.               Adios  Sgt. Jake

Bull -  Your time may be free, but your work sure ain't.  What a terrific job.  Agreed with everybody on the color.  Great "choice" you made.   ;)  That'll learn ya: next time, talk about how ya spent all night blending various tones when, slowly drifting into view by the light of the morning sun breaking on a new day, EUREKA!!! The perfect "aged, yet cared for" look.

Get some more free time, wouldja?

I've got my excuses and I'm stickin' to 'em.

I'd like to see one of your 'good' holsters...that one looks perfect  :D
Smoke em if ya got em.

Very nice piece of work, pard.
I'll also echo all the dye/finish comments.
Personally, that's the look I prefer for all my projects. For my taste, I don't usually care for the "brand new I just got this from the hardware store" perfectly uniform look. Nice job in my opinion.
