I have shot CAS now for approxemently four months at three diffrent locations I do not find it challenging except for the timeing of the various stages. I am not fast on the trigger, but I hit every target at CAS ranges if I take my time! I have been taught to take my time when shooting, particularly when hunting One has to be sure of one's target.
I know that all Cas targets are in plain sight thus they cannot be mistaken for anything other than for what they are but I still feel that accuracy is more important than speed.
When I handgun hunt this season I plan to use a rest as this improves my ability to hit the target and I will take my time also.

Cyrille,

You may find stages not challenging and even boring if you shoot cowboy action with a for you everlasting "fixed speed". We can all do that. It might be a comfort zone and to some, it is more than challenging enough and fun to reach the goal of hitting the target and taking your time doing it. If that is what you like, then go for that.

Now, cowboy action shooting can also be about personal goal on getting better when it comes to speed. With speed comes action and the challenges.

My rules are:

1. Be and shoot safe
2. have fun
3. find your personal balance between accuracy and speed and still be able to hit thr targets.
4. and here comes the challenging part where you and I are in charge..... not the organizers of the match or how challenging they set it up. It is not about the standard distances on pistol, rifle and shotgun or how big the targets are, but your personal challenge on increasing speed and at the same time keeping your accuracy.

This takes practise and for me it is always a challenge to balance accuracy and speed. Sometimes speed "takes control" and you start to miss. Sometimes accuracy becomes so important that you forget about speed.

No matter what your goals are. Bottom line is: CAS is mostly what you want to make out of it.

Hitting the targets at CAS sizes and distances isn't difficult.  Most anyone can do it.

Generally, I've found individuals who don't find it 'challenging' are ones who thought they were going to come into the game and do well right off the bat.  Two I know personally, that did do well in other shooting games, tried it then dropped out after they found themselves at the bottom of the list shoot after shoot.  Bruised their little egos.

If it's a challenge you're after, look at the lady that beat you last month and go into the next shoot determined to finish ahead of her this time.  You aren't hunting.  Hunting and CAS have nothing to do with each other.  In CAS, you're playing a structured game against others playing to the same rules and engaging the same scenarios

CAS is what you make of it.  I was way down the list Saturday.  Decided I didn't want to shoot one of the stages so I DNF'ed it and ran the clock for the others.  Couldn't have cared less about my score.  It's being with folks I enjoy being around that I don't get to see often enough.  Yelling and laughing.  There isn't much I'd trade that for.

If that sort of thing wasn't for me, I'd find something else to waste my time on

Want a challenge?
Try going for a clean match. I've been trying for a long time for my first clean match. I've come within 1 or 2 shots of a clean match and that's about it. And I am not a speed demon, either. I usally finish up mid-pack.

If you add up the minutes involved in shooting all the stages at a match I think you will find you will be surprised at just how little time you are actually spending in the act of shooting.  Personally,  I have NO desire to make my turn "at bat" go any faster than it already does.  My real life is hectic enough with time being a factor throughout the day.  I take my time, enjoy the act of shooting, enjoy the people I am with and end up near the bottom of the list everytime.  If the timer dissappeared, I probably would not even notice except for the fact I wouldnt hear that annoying "beep" in my ear!   :D    Just another viewpoint.  Regards.  Deadeye.

I.m still real new at this type of shooting . For many years I have been shooting front loaders and anything I can get my hands on .

I'm glad as I approach CAS that I see the real fun in the sport is the getting together , trading stories and lies and combining that with as much shooting as you want.

I have traveled miles to a range and never took the guns out of the truck..too busy visiting , eating and swapping tales.

I sincerely hope ,that as (God willing) ,I go more into this field it stays that way for me.

Thanks for listening and let me ramble on . You are a great pack to run with.

Dry powder and clear sights to all.

Some suggestions to make more out of your experience.  Try your hand at writing a stage or two, and if you're good at it, you'll spend good time writing challenging and/or unique stage scenarios.  Get involved more with the clubs in your area and go to a work party.  Then you'll be able to suggest changes in the way the targets are placed, and maybe even design and build some interactive targets.  Think of a bonus target for the very end of the stage that everyone must engage but doesn't count against them if missed.  Something like having to load one round in the rifle and shoot a swinger target, a can tosser for the shotgun or a longer range rifle target if the range will allow it; say 75-100 yards, one round staged on the body and loaded after all other firearms are secured and safe.

Try shooting different categories, like duelist or gunfighter, get a cap and ball revolver along with an easy to remove holster for shooting every other stage, and really work on personalizing your outfit.  Get yourself a project gun that needs some TLC and fix it up for CAS, have it reblued or color case colored, change the stock, put a John Wayne bog loop lever on it, etc.

As has been said, it's what you make of it, and I hope you make it the time of your life.

See you down the trail someday Pard!
