Anyone ever saw a dust cover on a original Henry rifle?
Here are some pics.

Do you know if it was removed during shooting or stayed in place?  ???

:-\ Sorry Slim, i didn't know. But when i look at the first pic, i think it has to be removed during shooting.
They wrote:'Extremely rare dust cover accessory of brass, pinned to wood, contoured to insert in top of breech aperture over front of bolt'.

That's alright, pard. To me, it looks like it has to be removed during shooting.

Looks to me like it is only in place when the rifle ain't in use. Not like the dustcover on a '73, which slides back automatically when the bolt comes back the first time. Looks like you would have to pop it out in order to eject any empties and work the action. It probably slides down around the bolt, but the carrier would bump it out when the carrier rose. I wonder if you could just use it like that, work the lever and the carrier would pop the dust cover out of the way?

Hmmmm.................may have to make one and find out.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

the sides of the cover rest on carrier and have pressure on the sides, as the lever is opened it will push the cover up and off; that is why they are so rare. They got in a hurry and forgot to remove them

Don't be sorry, yours has better photos.  ;D ;)

This is an Allen Firearms Henry which I traded for in the early 1980's.  The gun was new in the box when I got it and several years later, I had it engraved.  The serial number is very low, so before I had it engraved, I altered the butt plate and recontoured the frame to match the earlier Henry's in this same serial range.  About 15 years ago, I added the dust cover, which is patterned from an original I found at a gun show.  Over the years, some collectors and dealers have said that every Henry was shipped from the factory with one of these dust covers.  I've only seen a handfull of these on original guns and none of them were made the same.  It is my opinion that these were not a factory item.   The one I show here on my Allen Firearms Henry, fits flush with the top of the receiver and actually rests on the top edges of the carrier block.  It has only a snug fit in the receiver, so when the action is opened, the dust cover will flip up and out with the movement of the carried.  They are way cool, but very impractical.

Adios,
Buck
