I've heard similar comments Slowhand.  Most people have no idea of the time invested in quality leather.  I'm very happy to refer whiny complainers to websites like Kirkpatrick's.  I don't want their business.

Have you ever noticed that it's normally the people with ugliest and poorest fitting rigs that make the most noise.

         I think for the most part, that most of us are into doing quality gun leather and western items, and don't really care about making cheap inferior leather items, I've had several pards ask what it would cost to get one of my rigs or gun related items, only to hear them choke on the other end of the line, when I tell them, at that point I don't care to discuss it anymore and will suggest they look at some of the commercial company's that sell cheaper leather goods, as does TN Mongo, if the customer ask what makes mine different than the commercial ones, I'll tell them, but unless they have some understanding of what I'm talking about it really doesn't make any difference to them what I tell them, it's all about parting with their money, and people like this have no understanding of the time and skill it takes to do leather work, it's only human to want to get all you can for your money, and the cost of getting started can be overwhelming for some, if a customer can't afford my leather I suggest they buy cheaper just to see if they are going to stay with it, and then after they have been in CAS for a while if they still want a better rig and want one of mine to give me a call or email. Thirty five to forty dollars is not a lot to ask for mag holders of this quality, as long as they fit and will do the job intended, I'm sure there are others out there that get much more.

I fear I have steered this away from JDs orriginal subject but Purdy actually addressed this very well in a SASS Chronicle article once upon a time.  There are varying degrees of leather work out there and often we have allowed the lines between catalog items and true custom items to get blurred.  Many times we will find that the $50 (mag pouch) catalog item is of the best quality but it is not custom just because it has a certain makers name on it and most of the most successful makers did start out as custom.  It was their custom work that made their name and as long as they can keep up that quality on twenty cooky cutter holsters a day, the more customers who will still think they received custom quality products from them.   I just recently found out that some of the makers go far beyond what I thought was cooky cutter.  The article I read stated that some of their cutting dies were complete down to the individual stitch holes being punched.  Golly, Im not even sure my machine would be accurate enough to stay spaced that well!
