R&D makes the best ones. They drop right in. All you have to do is check to make sure the cylinder doesn't touch the frame at the bottom rear. If it touches, just file off a little bit where it makes contact and dress it up with touch-up bluing. I've put them in 5 pistols and two needed to have the frame relieved a little. I put a Kirst gated one in one pistol and although I really like it, it took some serious gunsmithing to make it work right. You can get the R&D cylinders from Taylors.

I like the R&D cylinder....drops right in my Pietta NMA with no problems....you may have to remove the blue from the cylinder pin though....takes about 5 mins.

I agree with Marshall Bill, the Kirst needed a lot of work to run smoothly in my Remingtons, and they are much harder on the soft Italian hand.  The Kirst 38 conversion for the Navy is much better than the 44 in my experience.  For the 44 I prefer the R&D.

I have a Kirst non-gated one in my Pietta new army remington.  It works great.  I bought it used.  The previouse owner didn't need to do any fitting and when I got it it worked perfectly in my gun as well.  Havn't shot it a ton yet butI plan to.  I like how I can see the cartridge rims and it has the non-chamber slot for the hammer to rest in.  Goes in and out real easy for reloading.
If I would hae found a used R&D at the same price I probably would have bought it.  It was just whichever one was the better price at the time.

I have both for my Pietta remmie , I had a kirst cylinder for my Uberti , so I ordered the front half for my Pietta so I could use the Kirst in both ...I`m thinking about doing the same for my R&D cylinder ...the Kirst front half was only 135.00 last year ..haven`t checked the price of the R&D front half yet . I like`m both never had a problem with eaither .

I think the first half or cylinder is $100 at Midway...you would have to call and order it on the phone though.

The first revolver I ever had was the 1858 Remington with the RandD cylinder in 45 colt.  Shoots like a dream.

I own and use both R&D and Kirst in Pietta 1858's. The main difference I see in them is that if you fumble and drop one after you have loaded it, the R&D has six totally exposed firing pins headed toward the ground, the Kirst has only one firing pin.
If it can happen, someday it will happen.
I dropped an R&D, luckly it hit on its side. No more trying to play "Pale Rider".

Well assuming you  are following the safety rules and have an empty chamber under the hammer, it should be a moot point.

OB was talking about the cylinder and recoil shield loaded OUT of the gun, dropped that way it could fire if it hit just right.

Please re-read what I said.
I dropped the R&D.
Not the revolver.
There wasn't even a cylinder in the revolver, much less a loaded chamber under the hammer and I didn't drop it.

Well,if you drop it just right or wrong and it goes off....you could become "Pale Rider" as all the blood leaves your body as they are loading you into the ambulance ;D God forbid....tasteless joke I know but....somebody had to do it.

:o  Well, it might be tasteless, but I got a real chuckle out of it.  :D Bet your boots, I'll be using it the next time the wife and I are watching a western. We love quick little sick comments like that.
Thanks a big bunch,
OB
