« on: September 27, 2007, 01:08:53 PM »
Howdy,
Does anyone make a gated conversion cylinder for the 1860 Army. Got a Stainless ASM 1860 I would like to do a gated conversion on.
Thanks for the help

not yet R&D said about 18 months ago... they would have one by Fall 06  :-X  nothing as yet Fall 07  :-[
I would not expect to see it in SS

I recommend R&D 2 piece conversion Cyl.  though , I have one in my 2nd Gen Colt... and it's hoot !

A gated cylinder would be nice BUT as Major 2 said the standard R&D setup will work great.....4 star rating ;D

A nice virtue of the R&D drop-in is that disassembling the barrel and reloading the cylinder gives you the opportunity to clean and relube the arbor pin, the gun will keep running without fouling to a stop with black powder.  By the way, the gun is safe with Cowboy smokeless loads if anyone asks..

It helps if your wedge is a finger tight fit so you don't need a mallet.

I shot a match with one 1860 drop-in and an 1858 Rem drop-in, using black powder loaded 45 Colt, they went through a match nicely.

Same here Flint... I've come to use 45 Sch though , not because of power It's fine with Black Hills LC's but
because my OT is chambered in 45 Sch...
so they are paired...
I discovered the 45 Sch. were slightly tighter @ POA , They are Goex Brand...
The gun is almost 30 years old... has been converted going on 2 years...

One caveat to the R&D drop-ins in 1860's is that the OAL of the rounds may need to be slightly shorter than typical 200 gr RNFP loads needed to function in most .45 Colt rifles.

Thanks for the replies. Good information, I may consider getting an R&D drop in.

Major 2, I am also shooting 45 Schofield in black powder rather than 45 Colt, as it uses less powder, still makes lots of smoke, and I have 72 Opentop cylinders and barrels in 45 Schofield to fit my 44s.  For the same reason, as wel as recoil, I shoot 44 Russian in the 44s.
