Picked one of these up this weekend.

Got a price a few hundred below what I had seen as asking price on most - due to the gun missing it's lanyard ring.

All matching  with a nice dark grey patina - excellent bore.

I'll post pics when I get her

What do ya'll who have these feed them - 9mm wise?

It turns out that the french used these guns too - I may just have to do a french victorian/pre-WWI outfit now - since I have the 1873 St Etienne revolver too.

WAHOOOOOOOOOO YEHAWWWWWWW

St. George

Copied in China and Spain - with varying degrees of sophistication - they were Contract Pistols for Indonesia, Turkey, Persia, and Norway - but not France.

Any that they may have used came from private purchase or battlefield pick-up during the Great War.

The Aussies and Brits were fond of them for trench raiding.

They're 'spring-sensitive' - so new springs all around is a very good idea.

Fortunately, so many of these came into this country from China about 15 years ago that a cottage industry sprang up rebuilding them, and new-condition spare parts abound - especially springs and grips, but also barrels.

Use standard-issue military Ball ammunition - you can find it commercially in the form of Winchester's 'White Box' stuff fairly reasonably.

I do not know when the "Broom-handle" Mauser became available in 9 mm.

However Lt. Winston Churchill used one, in .30 Mauser, in the Battle of Omdurman in 1898.

Anyone know where I can get a complete 9mm replacement upper, or for that matter a complete 30 cal upper. Currently Gun Parts Inc has none in stock. I have one built from parts, but the bbl is so shot out, there is no rifiling.

Thanks
Dusty

Mine is a German Army WWI pistol arsenal redone at Mauser plant to 9mm.

I got it for a little less than most Red nine's due to missing the lanyard ring.

It turns out the french police used Mauser's in small quantities post WWI.

I'll post pics when I get her.

Thnaks for all the comments and links.

PR, did you by chance pick up your Red Nine out at the Dulles show?  Sounds just like the one I successfully resisted early Saturday morning out there...

I've always thought the C96 was one of the few "Classic" military handguns in history (of the newer era).  Of the four ( the C96, P08, M1911/1911A1 and the P38 ) "classics" (in MY mind) the C96 is the only one I haven't experienced or owned.  I'd love to have one of the ones like yours, PR - Mauser coverts to 9mm, but I'd also be interested in one of the good Chinese 45ACP versions.  Yeah - not totally authentic to the original, but to me it falls into that category shared by the new-made 45ACP Lugers.

Congrats on a cool purchase!

Dusty,

You can get your barrel relined to either 30 cal or 9mm.

As St George mentioned there are many parts available for these pistols. Replacing springs is a good idea. In addition the replacing the bolt stop is recommended. The bolt stop is all that keeps the bolt from blowing back into the shooter's face. The stop on mine was worn a great deal so I replaced it with a new made one. Checking the firing pin protrusion is also a good idea.

Tubac, are there any Chinese C96s in 45 ACP in that picture?  I couldn't see any bigger barrels.  I'm wondering because I wanted to know about them first-hand.

Hi,
The middle one in the top row is a Shansei .45 (nice bluing pointing up).
I've shot FMJ and lead bullet reloads with out any problems. The main problem
is loading. I use an "03 stipper clip, but it doesn't hold ten shells. I've heard an
SKS stripper will work but I havent tried one. You can also remove the magazine floor-
plate, load and then intall the carrier, but that is a P.I.T. A.
All in all I enjoy the gun, it really attracks attention.

Don't forget the Russians/Soviets were very fond of this pistol.
Service before self.

The ID of the SKS stripper Clip would have to be opened up just a tad,...the one I just tried was just a bit too tight to feed them through.
AS far as the clip fitting into the top of the action on the C96 45ACP I don't know either as I don't have one to try,.....but if someone would send me one I'd surely try to make it work, or have a lot of fun trying,....

Sgt Chapman
