At The "Great Nor'Easter, I met a man named Jim Downing, THE gun engraver. I'd never seen
"real" engraving done, and his work is awesome, and he's a personable guy who chatted along as he "scratched on" some guns, making beautiful art as we shot the breeze during the slack times on vendor row.

Sooooo, though my guns are plain, and I'm not much for the flashy stuff, pretty soon I got to thinking about personalizing my "original" Cowboy .45 Special marlin conversion.  Marlins are a lousy canvas, but hey, ya work with what ya got.

Before the day was over, I decided I wanted to do a little something on both Marlins, and after talking it over with Jim, took the bolts out and brought em to him.  We did a little horse trading for some merchandize I had on display, and I got to bring home a tiny bit of the master engraver's art.

If yer needin' any scratchin' done on yer cowboy guns, give Jim a holler http://www.thegunengraver.com/

This is my dedicated BP gun, so the topic does pertain to BP guns ;)
The other gun, "#1", looks amazingly the same, even though I stood there watching and know Jim did 'em totally freehand.  It's dirty as all get out just now, so I ain't got a pic of it yet :)

He does wonderful work.  He comes to our state championship just about every year and I don't think he ever gets a break.  Lots of pards showing off their new scratches after the first couple days.  I am getting a new to me 73 in .45 and I think I am going to see about getting my brand engraved in the sideplate.
He any good?
He's killed more people than smallpox!
Well hell, introduce us.

Now ya dun  it AJ.  It's now a collectors item fer sure.  The gun that helped develop Cowboy 45 Special loads will live in a museum glass case one day.  People will stop by and speak in hushed tones as they read the polished bronze plaque.  Ancient pards, remembering the day the new round was introduced, will simply stand silently, a tear will flow down an old wrinkled cheek and the memories will wash over them of fast accurate low recoil cowboy action.

And here I was dreamin' of buyin' that gun off ya one day when ya had a moment of weakness. . .

Got #1 cleaned up and photographed.

Not too shabby ;)

Ho, DD  Them stumpy little EPP bullets drew quite a bit of attention at the NorEaster.

Jim dressed up my '73 a few years ago.

That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

I like where he inscribed the guns.  If you should happen to want to sell those babys one day...or should your children want to sell them all they need to do is buy replacement dust covers or side plates.   Good thinking!!

Well, yeah, that was why I had Jim engrave my dustcover. I actually bought a second one for him to engrave and still have the original.

But I think AJ will have to spend a bit more to replace the bolt on his Marlin.

Sell?  replace??  Such talk  ::)

I would have had the engraving done on the BBL flats but the bolt gave a bigger canvas.

Besides, the scratchin' tells the next idiot to use the gun that it is not yer garden variety .45 Colt ;)
