'60 Army-'61 Navy

Greetings.

I had asked this question over on the SASS site and got a couple of responses.

I have a Pietta '60 Army and a Uberti '61 Navy and am wondering what the heck you do with those two big screw heads in the frame to attach a stock.  I have kinda short stubby fingers and on both pieces my right index finger is right over the screw on the right side of the frame.

Things to do to eliminate the discomfort?  When shooting these pieces of art I have been taking the right side screw out...but I know Murphy's law that one of these times I won't be able to find it again.

Anyone know the thread size of these screws?  I could possibly find a small headed screw to replace those lugs.

Thanks and am having a hellofa good time making some smoke...might try shootin' them short smoke poles at the monthly shoot.  It's hell to have clubs for hands and I can't reload the cylinders with any speed at all....I look like a club handed dufus beatin' on a transmission with a plastic bat.. it ain't pretty.  I checked the price for an extra '61 Navy cylinder and nearly 80 bucks at VTI.  I can get an extra cylinder for the Army through Cabela's for less than half that price.

Howdy!

My Ubertii 1860, bought in 1975, had the 2 stock-attachment screws that had thin screws.  I'd call VTI and see if their replacement screws are the thick ones or thin.  I'm thinking they should be the same screw thread/pitch, even between the two manufacturers.  Some folks have had the holes welded and the frame refinished, but that sounds like too much trouble to me.  In a pinch, some JB Weld or Epoxy filler could be used, carefully sanded, then given the "Sharpie" bluing treatment, but you'd have to be very careful.  If you're handy at a grinder, you could thin the heads, then recut the slot with a Dremel tool.  A bit of 44-40 or Brownells cold blue would touch it up nicely.

I don't know if those Italian imports use Metric or SAE threads, but it'd be fairly easy to find out.  Again, VTI Gunparts might be able to answer questions or provide some aftermarket replacements.

Expanding on Steel Horse Bailey's advise.....

Tried the replacement-screw-thing once....screw threads didn't exactly match...so I tossed them, took out the issue screws and thinned the heads using my poor-man's lathe (3/8" variable speed drill). Started with a file, then emory paper, deepen the screw slot, if needed, then either fire blue, or cold blue. Perfect and just the way I wanted them.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to take the screws out and tape them to the inside of the gun box or learn to place them somewhere they will be safe and remembered where they are. Hell, if you did loose them so what.....if you don't use a shoulder stock you don't need em anyway. The idea of turning them(screews) down in a high tech poor mans lathe(like mine) made of a drill in a vise and fire bluing with a propane torch is cool.

Here's another idea.  Put them in a vise, cut the heads off with a hacksaw, vile a small slot in the end and put on some red lock tite, screw them in flush with the frame.  Oh yeah, cold blue the visible ends first.

If they match the nipple, they are #12-28 thread.  Metric equivalent would be M5.5x0.9.

Thinning them out or completely removing the heads and reslotting isn't a bad idea.   Locktite them if you remove the heads so they don't turn and creep in to jam the action.  I may experiment with the nipple idea, as I have a pile of them that were replaced with Treso nipples.

I managed to find some "Civilian" 60s and 61s that don't have thge 4th screw.  The do feel better to shoot.
