It just occurred to me that the original .44 Henry flat supposedly propelled a 200 grain bullet at 1120 fps.  Black Hills lists their .44-40 at 1150 fps from a 24 inch barrel.  How close is that!

I know I used to duplicate the Henry round when I had a 45 Colt model with a 200 grain bullet, 28 grains FFFG Goex and a .45 Schofield case.  Anyone have the formula for 1120 fps with a 200 grain bullet and BP in .44-40 case?  I was thinking about a 200 grain bullet, a wonder wad, and about 28-29 grains GOEX FFG BP. I not big on fillers, though I use cream of wheat on my 44 Remington blanks in CW re-enacting.

I have been using 777 mostly in my cartridge guns, but if BP is cheaper and easier to get in Illinois thanin the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia, I may switch to BP for cartridge also. There I had to use what I could get for my CW stuff (Spencer, Smith, and Remmie)

TL,
I'm recreating the 44 Herny Flat C.F. with 44 Russian brass and Old west Moulds 248 Grn heeledbullet .451 dia (like OCB) and modifying the nose to about .27-.30 Dia Flat. I can get 28 Grns of FFFG in that case (very well compressed I might add. but not enough to deform the case).
Bernie will make me a 44 Henry Flat C.F. crimper(44 Russian and his heeled bullet). The 44 Russian Case is .072 longer than the original 44 Henry Flat C.F., the case dia is very close to original case dia, as is the rim dia.

That is about as close as I can come to the original 44 Henry Flat C.F. without buying the 44 Henry flat c.f. brass from Buffalo Arms.....Yep they have it listed, both Original chambering and the R & D chambering, but who wants to pay $1.10 apiece for the brass. I might buy a few to see what they are made from though.
