Nolan, how do you prepare hair for putting it into tin cones?  I've used horse hair that's long enough I simply double it, tie a length of sinew or cord around the middle, and pull it through.  I have some hair that's considerably shorter (due to my wife's insistence) that I'd like to use.  It just isn't long enough to do it that way.

Thanks.

Here ya go - this is taken from the book "Plains Indian Knife Sheaths" by Alex Koslov and available from Crazy Crow. This book is an excellent resource - the pictures of originals alone are worth the price of $17.95.

I've also used the glue method (49b) and then whipped it (like I learned in the Boy Scouts) to the thong with thread...........

Figures 49 a & b look good.  Any recommendation on the kind of glue to use?  Elmers thinned down, Barge cement, super glue?  :D

Thanks.

I'd recommend Barge Cement, since it adds flexibility and waterproofing.

It also gives you 'time' to make sure you're happy with your results - Super Glue won't do that, and watered Elmer's won't set as quickly.

Good Luck.

Can Barge be thinned down so it will "run" into the hair more easily?

You can get Barge thinner. I keep it on hand in case I need to take something apart or, more commonly, my glue gets thickened from being open too much.

Well, guess I'll see how it works.  Thanks, fellas.

I normally do the fold over style but when the hair is short and I do the glue thing - I whip it with thread first as noted above to hold together and then use
1) Super Glue or
2) The liguid hide or
3) when being totally HC I use my own homemade hot hide glue - for this you can buy the pre-made crystals form several wood working outfits, use clear gelatin - cook until thickened, or to make your own - chips of rawhide cooked in water at a low boil until it's dissolved/thickened enough)

SUPER GLUE!!!

Never even thought of that, but I use it on all kinds of projects.  I'll try SG and Barge.  All the rest sounds like too much work.  I'm retired and have a black belt in laziness.
