I've been looking at BP brands and substitutes alot over the weekend. Do any of you prefer a particular brand? Exclusively use substitutes? Does it matter?

Cabela's has an "American Pioneer" substitute, but I've heard nothing about it. Anyone know something?

Trying to find a good charge for my 1858 Remmie.  ;D

Sorry about this.  :-[

It said there was an error about a session timeout, so I thought it didn't post my question.  :-\

I'm a serious fan of the Hodgdon 777, and I load it in my cartridges, shotshells, C&B, you name it.... It is a little more "energetic" than standard BP, and you do not have to use as much of it to get the desired effect.

For my '58's I have foun about 25 grains of 2F 777 with a wonderwad and round ball to be about perfect for CAS. If I want more BOOM and recoil, I up it to 30 grains.

With the 25 grain load, I was amazed at the accuracy and consistancy. Recoil is mild and there is still plenty of smoke.
Clean up with tap water and a toothbrush.... Lube with bore butter or olive oil.

I like it in my cartridges also becuase I can used standard heathen lubed bullets and run it through my Dillon without any problems.

Recently I have started loading real BP in my shotgun shells because it was cheaper and I found a limited source of it locally.

Give 777 a whirl, you will like it.

I use 777 and APP (American Pioneer Powder) in my cartridge guns, both are a bit hotter than Goex.

I am using about 80% by volume of 777 instead of Goex and a smokeless lubed bullet, 777 doesn't have to be compressed.
APP is a full case, lightly compressed and a smokeless lubed bullet.

Both work fine for me and I find both easy to clean. I use whichever I can find and whichever is cheapest if I can get both.

Thanks, everyone.  ;D

I'll give the 777 a try. Cabela's doesn't seem to carry Goex. Not that I'd have to get it from there. Anyone know a cheap(er) source?

Getting it local isn't really feasible. A gun shop around here is a white elephant.  ;)

http://www.powderinc.com   for real black powder... various brands. The prices include shippng and hazmat fee. 25# boxes are the best deal from them, but even in 10# orders you are beating retail prices. They do have Goex in 3F. If you shoot rifles, they have 2F. For shotguns, they have Goex 1F, but don't overlook the significantly cheaper 1F "Skirmish powder". I use it in my cannons quite a bit due to the much cheaper price compaired to Goex, and I use it in shotguns as well.

One thing I hate about Pyrodex is the acidy smell when you shoot it.

Thanks, Rickk.  :)

I'll give them a try. I'd rather use the "real stuff", and try out afew others, figure out what'll work best for me.

Hey See Thrity, where in CT do you live? I live just over the border going up route 10 in western Mass

SeeThirty

Sorry Rickk, I don't live in CT. I'm far south of there.  ;D

Didn't realize I forgot to put location info into my profile, I'm in Florida.

rickk

guess I was not paying much attention to what I was reading.

I saw the letters "CT" and didn't quite pay attention to who wrote it.

Looks like maybe I am not too far from Barbarosa.

Anyway, I have ordered from Powder, Inc several times and they are a nice place to deal with. Shipments will come fast. I think it comes Fedex. They apparently don't want it sitting around in a truck someplace so they move it along right quick.

Whil it is not legal to resell BP without licensing, it is legal for a group of people to chip in on a shipment. That being the case, anything you can do to get up to 25# will help save you big bucks.

SeeThirty

You also would live near the other "Reservation" called Mohegan Suns.  ;D

A friend of mine lives in CT as well.
