I know it's off topic-ish, but I figured y'all might know how to fix an evil levergun.

OK, I'm being dramatic, but I have a 1951 336SC that is giving me the worst headache. I bought it for $125 at a pawn shop as a project rifle and figured the best thing to do was take it apart to clean it up. It looked like it was shot twice in the 60's and left in a closet to collect dust. You wouldn't believe the dust.
Anyway, I've gotten the whole thing stripped out except the mag tube and mag tube plug. Neither will move. I tried soaking 'em in moosemilk, spraying with WD40, spraying with graphite lube, beating it with a stick (really) and drilling it out (my extractor bit broke in the hole).
I already have a replacement tube plug but do I need to just cut the magazine and replace it as well?

I dunno 'bout Coke.  I ain't never used it for nothin' but mixin' wit' Jack Daniels & ice.   ::)  ;D

I have used Kano's Aero Kroil for nasty stuff (like your Marlin tube problem) for the last 20+ years.  It's the best stuff I have ever seen.  You may have some trouble findin' it.  If'n ye can't get it locally, lemme know.  I can fix ye up wit' a sample bottle for free.

Turns out the tube plug was being held in place by the magazine tube stud. Instead of a barrel band it screwed into the stud. Thanks for your help, y'all. Now I've gotta find a replacement plug for the one I butchered. The replacement I got was for the full tube mags. At least Brownells is low key about returns.

Perfect example of why amateurs shouldn't work on old guns...depletes the supply of parts for those of us that know what we're doing...

Brian Why

Golly Mr. Expert, maybe if you weren't so smug we lowly amateurs would be able to learn more from you.

I'm learning on trashed out pawn shop guns. Whose rifle did you learn on?

If that's so, why come to this forum? Couldn't you just gloat about your superior knowledge to your customers? I was under the impression we were here to share our experiences with the nuances of gunsmithing CAS guns.

...and how is my being a clown relevant to this discussion?

Howdy!

Brian, I applaud you for trying this fix.  Ya gotta learn SOMEHOW!  Knowledge is for EVERYONE - not just a select few.  And Will, I'm sure you won't lack for business.  There are plenty of folks out there who DON'T want to learn;  that's why yer in business, right?  Do you know of Marauder's site?  There's a lot of other information there.  http://www.marauder.homestead.com/irons.html
