Does anyone know when the "push button" action (like a modern NEF) came into being? I know most single shots probably had a lever like a SXS or OU but was curious about what year the "button" (or push lever, heck I don't know what to call it ???) came into use. I am wondering if the NEF style single shots are even near "historically correct" for the old west or if they are even legal (minus ejector) for SASS.
Thanks,

During the period - the only thing seen in the pre-1900 catalogs are levers of one shape or another - and automatic ejectors were on the scene at that time.

That 'push-button' variant came about much, much later.

As to SASS 'legality' - no idea - but I'm sure someone will help you with that answer.

Thanks St. George,
I knew that auto ejectors existed back then(which is way NCOWS allows them), I was trying to say that I know they were illegal for SASS. All the shotguns from the period I have seen have had levers as well (including under levers, side levers, etc) but I was just curious. It's awful tempting to buy a cheap NEF 10 Ga for use with BP but I would like to keep with at least somewhat period correct firearms.

Look around at used gun sites, Savage did build some 10's back in the 70's with the top lever, on of those just might show up.

Single shot shotguns have always been plentiful.  You can find them pretty cheap.
Recently I bought a "White Powder Wonder" at a gun show for $50.00.  It has the proper lever.

One way to find old guns is at older neighborhood garage sales. Just ask if they have any old guns they might want to part with.  You will be surprised what you come upon.
