Shoot Fire!

I recently purchased a pair of what Taylor's lists as the 1871 C. Mason Revolver, and Cimarron calls the 1851 Richard Mason conversion.

I purchased them from Taylor's, and the Ladies were kind enough to notify my when a pair returned from a gun show (#s xxxx09 and xxxx10!) and they are both 5 1/2 inch barrels with the 44 colt cylinder..  I have been all but wandering around the house in my underwear with them (thankfully my lovely wife understands!) for the past month or so and finally got to shoot them. 

Well another gentleman was shooting a pair of open tops and I noticed the spike of fire out the top... oh that was pretty cool... 

My friend borrowed one to round out his kit for the day (and I was borrowing his rifle so it worked out) so I got to watch the same flame pattern shoot out the top of mine, oh that was pretty darn cool!  I never noticed it my self when firing but he assured me it was there.  I pretty much just made lead go down range, but the times I was paying more attention to the sight picture they never missed, the hammer pull was light enough for this green horn, and the trigger pull was light enough I touched it off at least once before I brought the pistol back down.  Only thing I have really done to the revolvers is put a bit of leather under the hammer spring, I did replace the pins that hold the firing pin in, and replaced the pin that holds the cylinder pin in place with set screws then cleaned then really good, and Ballistol the heck out of them.

Oh I cannot WAIT until I can push some black powder through these babies once outdoor shooting starts up.

I am intrigued by the way the fire went up, not a ring of it all across the face of the cylinder, just up.  Looks like the way the forcing cone and the cylinder match up it is a tad wider at the top.

Also setting the wedges the same as with the Open Tops tighten the screw and move the wedge to stop against it as suggested a couple places on this list.  Other than that nothing loosened up, and all was good!  Was using UltraMax 44 colt loads with 230 grain bullets, a bit much for indoors, but I am getting that resolved right away with reloading some Russian Bullets as soon as the pieces parts start arriving at my door step.

But that shore do give a whole new meanin to purty little red dress.

 That barrel looks too big for that holster, maybe it was a store keeper model before it got excited...!!
