Got my Kirst Konverter today!

Howdy to the camp,

Stopped at the PO Box on the way to work today and got my Kirst converter for my Uberti 1858 Remmington forged frame.  Have not had it on the gun yet, but so far I like it better than the R&D.  While the R&D with the rotating two piece cylinder is historical accurate to a degree, all of the two piece cylinders were for the 38 rimfires and smaller.  None were made with firing pins in the back half, and none were made (according to Mc Dowell) for the NMA 44s.  The Kirst Konverter has just the cylinder rotate, and the back plate stays stationary.  More historically correct.

As for 5 shots in the Kirst  versus 6 shots in the R&D, the original .46 rimfire conversions were only 5 shots.  They carried them with 5 full, and had the hammer rest between rims in notches on the rear face of the cylinder. With the original Colts and Remmies, they generally only carried 5 anyway.

As I shoot Schofield with 230s and about 26 grains of powder, I think thats pretty correct.

On my computer at a former job I had a photograph from a gun auction of an 1860 Army (I think) that had a two-piece CF conversion with individual firing pins.  Maybe I printed it out and have it in a file somewhere.  I figured the R&D guys got the idea from somewhere.  There is nothing new under the Sun!

Wow, that would be a great one to have.  I wonder how McDowell missed that.  Must be a "one of" gunsmith job.  When I used R&Ds, I always figured I could back off an authenticity nazi by the "one of" argument!<GGG>
