I tried it that way but had difficulties with the hand hanging up on the pawl when re-inserting it. The bold drops away long before it gets to the half-cock position and isn't an issue. The hand isn't fully extended yet so it is not sticking out to catch on the cylinder.

I tried "playing" with the hammer when trying to re-insert the cylinder on the Uberti I had last year. I finally got the C&B cylinder in after a dogfight, but the rising bolt (latch) chewed it up good. One of the reasons I sold that gun (besides its terrible quality) was the fact that I couldn't insert the cylinder without gouging the crap out of it. I've read that the Kirst is easier to insert than the R&D because of the channel cut in the backplate, and though I've also read that the Kirst will prematurely chew up the hand, I plan to get one so I won't get frustrated with cylinder insertion.

This is the case. In fact, it takes perhaps 16 seconds to switch an R&D and about 12 to switch a Kirst. Then again, all the R&D's worked right out of the box and I really had to fiddle with my Kirst to get it to work correctly. I like the R&D cylinders because they go from one gun to the other slick as can be with no mods, other than one pistol that needed the frame to be relieved slightly to the R&D cylinders wouldn't rub. R&D cylinders are also 6-shot in .45. My Kirst is a .38 and it is 6-shot also. Choices, choices. Get a gated cylinder and you don't have to switch it.

All this info.is great-today I went to Cabela's and picked up a Remy "58" new Model Army and I must say this gun looks real good(made by Pietta)and I have not been a big fan of Pietta in the past(I like Uberti's) BUT I'm changing my mind, I think. I can take it apart and put it back together so fast it is hard to believe! Maybe, I can get some input as too which to get a 45 Kirst drop-in or the 45 R&D drop-in, I'm kinda thinking it should be the R&D???BTW if you guys don't know Cabela's is selling the "58's" for $199.99 no FFL of course. I called my local gun shop and they wanted $375.00 for the Uberti and the Pietta "58" I could not believe the gap in price between these two retail stores,go figure,Oh,at Cabela's the price is the same if you order the gun online or at Cabela's retail store. I guess, I should ask to be signed up here since I now own a 1858 Remy New Army soon to be converted too .45 colt. Dusty.
