I am having some difficulty getting some Lead build up in the Forcing Cone cleaned out.  Any suggestions?

Great question Doc.  And the Newbie asks:  Why does extreme leading occur, and how can you prevent it?

Doc Sunrise

NB,

Since everybody else is in a stooper, I tried something this morning that worked.  I put Lead cleaner on the Forcing Cone and let it soak.  Then, I put my cleaning rod through until it was close to the Frame opening, and then from the Frame opening placed and screwed in a .50 cal. brush.  Then just pulled back enough for the brush to be in the Forcing Cone and spun it a couple of times.  Repeated this process two more times, now the Lead problem is no more.

Leading can be caused by several things. Wrong size bullet, too soft for the speed that it's being driven at, Not a good enough crimp, or gas cutting............Buck 8) ;)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

After having had exactly that problem for many year I found a way last year to remove that lead which works for me and I am using it ever since: Put the caliber correct bronce brush on the correct barrel length cleaning rod and screw the rod into a battery driven screw driver. Push from the muzzle into the forcing cone...and there goes the lead after a couple of revs! Works also nicely to clean the chambers of my Single Actions and rifles (with extended cleaning rod, of cause).

Usually it's the reverse: bullets too hard.  ;)  Bullets don't obturate as easily with smokeless as with BP. Smokeless invariably leads more than BP. Actually it's not "leading" but really "tinning" that is taking place. If you cast try a softer bullet. If not, then you are at the mercy of commercial casters who cast hard bullets for cosmetic reasons. Desperado Bullets sells CAS bullets that are 20 to 1 and word has it they are wonderful. I cast my own & the only time I've ever had leading was with hard commercial bullets. I've even shot pure lead bullets with BP loads with zero leading.

Lewis Lead Remover sold by Brownells is the best tool for the job.  It removes the lead and will polish the cone to help prevent more lead build up in the future.

Thank you all.  Great Tips!  Although cleaning is a pain in the you know what, it is most satisfying when it is done right.

I use a very fine steel wool wrapped around a nylon brush, ;D ;D ;D ;D

The Lewis lead remover kit from Brownells is still in second place.
