Major 2

This afternoon I lost my pal "Major"
He was my Cavalry Mount since "99" Raymond Campaign he was three at the time, and very steady as a battle horse.
Together we rode many event at the head of Second Florida Cavalry in 12 States .
We retired from active eventing in 2001 ( myself after 28 years )
Today, he was fine as usual perky and ready for his breakfast. This afternoon he was playing with one on the other horses at 3 PM
I found him "gone under " at 5 PM.
I think Heart attack, certain it was not colic and no wounds were found.
I feel so bad because I had no warning and no chance to help him.... :'(

He is now with "China" and they romp together in Fiddler's Green
I'll see them one day and we will ride together again.

RIP "MAJOR"  3/25/07  age 11 years .... :'(

"Are you the one who makes the horse so brave
and covers his neck with flowing hair?
Do you make him leap like a grasshopper?

His proud neighing spreads terror far and wide.
Exultantly he paws the soil of the valley,
and prances eagerly to meet the clash of arms.
He laughs at fear; he is afraid of nothing,
he recoils before no sword.

On his back the quiver rattles,
the flashing spear and javelin.
Quivering with impatience, he eats up the miles;
when the trumpet sounds, there is no holding him.

At each trumpet blast, he shouts 'Hurrah!'
He scents the battle from afar,
hearing the thundering of chiefs, the shouts."

Sorry to hear about Major.  A man should consider himself extemely fortunate if he has one good friend and one good horse in his lifetime.  Black Jack died 11 years ago and can never be replaced.

"There are those who argue that everything breaks even in this old dump of a world of ours. I suppose these ginks who argue that way hold that because the rich man gets ice in the summer and the poor man gets it in the winter things are breaking even for both. Maybe so, but I'll swear I can't see it

Major 2

Thanks Pards you words bring warmth, and a swelling in my chest... :'(

China Red was my Cavalry Horse from 1975 till 1995,  She was 25 and still game, sadly I was forced to put her down
at 28.
I've had Rienzi since 1982 and she grieves with me tonight.
I purchased Major in 1999 at 3 years old.

I can still see China from time to time , as she served as my on camera horse in the "Blue & the Gray" , "Houston the Legend Texas"
"Glory" to name a few.
Rienzi, also had parts in those films...
Major was a starlet in that he only saw work in one or two films.... All three along with Santana, Baxar, Dixie served me well.

They all were, great reenactment horses...

We will lay Major to rest in the morning not far from China Red.
He will be missed.

Fox Creek Kid

Major, I remember one time I asked my late grandfather, who was then in his nineties & who farmed with horses until 1935, what he missed most about farming and he replied "horses". He also told me of the tragedy of losing his finest horse. I could see the pain in his eyes even after better than sixty years. I've never owned a horse, but I can remember that painful look upon his face as if he were in front of me.

I'm sorry for your loss my fine friend.
