  Howdy,

I have been volunteered to head up fixin up our shootin range.  It is now a hundred yard range and they want to add a two hundred yard shot to the range.  The bearm is way to low and the backstop is in poor shape.  I need specs on how to construct the bearm.  One of their main concerns is how to keep erosion from wearing the bearm down.  Maybe plant grass on it?  Can we use old tires covered with dirt?
We have access to heavy equipment and all the dirt we need.  I would like to create one or two bearms down the middle so down the road we might have cowboy action shootin here.  with maybe room for three stages.
Can anyone point me in the right direction concerning specs and ideas?  I want to print out some satelite photos and have drawings and figures and most of the answers before submitting it at our next meeting.
I have plenty of railroad ties to contruct the backstop.  This club has plenty of money in the bank and needs to spend some.   ;D

Buck, it might be useful to know the height of your bearm now, the height of your present backsop, the width of the range,  type of soil available and drainage of the range.   how much foot traffic will be on the bearms to deal with erosion details and the type of grass that might be used.
it's just stuff that may give someone a few ideas of what they might be dealing with.
We done it for Dixie,  nothing else

  Howdy Mr. Tracker,

The height of the present bearm is probably eight feet...I want to make it at least 16 feet.  The backstop is about six feet by six feet square. All shot up, cause it has been there for a long time and never maintained.  There is a nice covered shooting table 100 yards from the backstop.  It is made for two shooters and is along the far left side of the range.  The range is about 150 feet across and presently 100 yards long.  On the far right side there is an automatic trap for shooting clays.
This is a thirty year old deer hunting club and only members and there guest can shoot.  The guys mostly use the range to sight in their rifles when planning on an out of state hunt or slug guns and muzzelloaders.  New Jersey is a shotgun and muzzeleloader state.
The range presently has good drainage and no standing water after a good storm...the ground is mostly sandy ( it is leased from a sand mining company) and it is grass covered.  I havent measured it yet, but there is at least a mile of woods behind the backstop.  I want to create a safety zone with signage at least 1000 feet behind the backstop.
I would like to extend the bearm along both sides of the range and divide the range with one or two bearms and create some shooting bays for future cowboy shooting. Some of the members have expressed interest in cowboy action shootin. ( I joined the club last year so I could use the range ) I'm presently the only cowboy but I'm workin on them. :)
I have been lookin on line for specs for makin the bearm. Like height, angle, materials and such. I see there are some formulas they are using for angles and heights depending on the distances being shot.
I am still on the fact finding mission, and have to present it to the club at a meeting to be voted on by the members.  I would like to have all my ducks in a row before I present it.  I am open for any suggestions.

this is my longest post!  thanks for listening

Might suggest checking with the NRA as I know they have a resource on range-building. It should be on their website. Good luck on your project.
