Cord-de-Roy I believe is the original spelling & it means "Cord of Kings", as I recollect.
It has been around so long that the runnels were Hand Cut into the material at first, so say starting in the 9th Century.

I thought it was older than the 1770's but that's what my dick-eeen-ary says for when the word became part of our laungage.  I'll bet that's when the present spellin' came about.  Kinda like around WWI when they changed tyre to tire
