Electronic Ear Muffs

I have decided to get some and was wondering if anyone had any experince with them.  I will mostly use them for gun hunting.  I want some that will amplify the sound since my hearing is pretty bad.

What features should I look for and compare when looking?

I see that Pro-Ears has 2 types.  The Dimension 1 and the Dimension 2.  The Dem 2s have a input jack which allows the plugging in of a radio.  My sons and I do keep in touch by FRS radios so that might be a good feature.  Is this needed?



Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Will,  I have a pair of these Peltor Tactical 6s the 'behind the neck' spring arrangement is good if you intend to wear a hat that you don't want crushed by the earmuffs. Since these amplify 'normal' sounds and only blank out loud/sharp sounds like gunfire they shouldn't effect normal use of radios...at least not so much as to warranty an extra $100   for the fancier model http://www.midwayusa.com/rewriteaproduct/425180

I have a couple pair.  I had to get something.  With normal hearing protection, I could not hear the range commands.
I have a couple hearing aid size units I wear Cowboy shooting.  One is made by Walker and it is called a Range Ear or something like that.  The other is a Tac Ear by radians.  It is the only way I am safe to shoot with!

The best electronic ones I've seen are fitted to the ear like a hearing aid. Easy to wear a hat since they aren't any bigger than the fancy molded-to-fit ones. Well, they are molded to fit, just with an electronic valve in them.

Midway is having a sale on the Peltor models for $89.95. Can somebody describe the placement of the band on the behind the head models. I am interested in this because, like so many here, my hearing is beginning to wane. Do they rest on the collar? Neck, Where. In other words, how do they stay in place? I fear that they will shift and lose their seal.

I have only worn mine trapshooting, and yes they do tend to shift, especially if it is warm  and you might be sweating.  The muffs get pretty warm on the inside.  I don't think they would be a problem shooting off the bench or handgun shooting, but I wear the 'over-the noggin' ones for that.  Huh?

I picked up a cheap pair at Harbor Freight for $25. For what I use them for, they work great! Benchwork, when I'm running 5 Stand and Clays machines, even power equipment when working with someone else that I need to talk to at times. They are the over-the-top-of-the-head kind. They do amplify ambient sounds a bit, but can you hear the squirrel 50 yards away scratching a flea? Nope.
