Stag Grips: Period Correct? 1860-1890?

Like to know pards if anyone has seen pictures of stag grips on the guns of that period. I think that Holywood brought them to popularity after the turn of the centurey. Anyway I want to be as period correct when I wear my 2 USFA's ( Black powder frame,38WCF)

I looked through several books with historical pictures, and I did not find one SAA with stag grips.  Rubber, Wood, Ivory, and Mother of Pearl were the favorites I could find.  I know Colt used some Stag for 2nd generation stuff, but I can't help you from there.  Sorry!

First off, welcome to the board.  Hope to see more of you here in the future.
I think you (and Doc) are right about the stag grips.  Pretty much a post 1900 thing.  Hard rubber (gutta percha) and wood were the standards.  Ivory and mother of pearl, in that order, the most popular "fancy" grips.  I have no doubt that someone back then had stag grips but they were by no means common.
Personally, I like the looks of them and wouldn't hesitate to put them on one of my USFA's (only set I have now are on a nickle plated Colt buntline).  Period correct is nice but style points are better.

I just saw another Colt SAA with Stag grips with the Colt medallions from 1956.  I can find nothing in 1st generation. 

Stag grips are usually identified as a gun owner's attempt to personalize his of her gun.  I would say if you enjoy Stag that you would have been very likely to have them installed if you had lived in that period, so for you they would be period correct.
