Lowering point of impact

I just bought myself another little Remngton .31 from Cabelas and I love it - except for one thing. The point of impact is 8" above point of aim at 25 feet! I'm shooting 12 grains of Goex fffg and a .315 ball with a little Bore Butter in front. What I'm wondering is if changing granulation to ffffg or ffg, or perhaps using Pyrodex or a .318 ball would lower point of impact? I don't want to change the front sight if I can help it - can anyone suggest a solution?

A heavier ball will raise the POI. Is it possible to file the rear sight notch lower? You may want to try a different amount of powder as well as a different one.

Howdy,

It should have a shaved post front sight.  You can cut off the blade where it starts to swell into the post, then cut a groove to solder a new blade of brass in.  shape it first, then file it down a little at a time until you get the right POI

If he's shooting 8" ABOVE the POA he should be ADDING to the front sight height, not shaving it down???

Standard rule;
1. Move the rear sight in the direction you need to move the MPI
2.  Move the front site in the opposite direction that you want the MPI to go.  i.e. towards the error!

For pistols;
3.  Regardless of the velocity, heavier bullets raise the MPI, lighter bullets lower it.

Therefore; to lower the point of impact you must RAISE the front sight.  (or use a lighter projectile.)

Its pretty hard to find a lighter bullet than a round ball!

He`s saying shave the front sight off...then add a new taller front sight made from a brass blade ...this would be correct ...i wouldn`t file down the rear ///its much easyer to work with the front sight .

I found that the little brass disks you stamp vehicle nos. etc. that go on keychains you get at key shops are a good piece of brass to use for the blade on a pocket pistol.  Used on for a front sight on an old Iver Johnson top break years ago.  They solder into the slot you cut into the trimmed sight base nice and are easy to shape.

Brass car wash tokens work really well to and you can get a few out of each one. The front sight of one of the Gunslinger 4 3/4" bbl 58 Euroarms Remy has one and it shoots POA at CAS yardages...POA at the coyote out my back door too, about 50 yds away.
