Hello SSS,

Seems to me it is a Spencer.  The photo was taken during the Modoc Indian War 1872-1873. What do you think?  Is it a Spencer?

   Greetings!

The author below states that the Native Scouts in the Modoc War were issued both Sharps and Spencer Carbines; personally, the few photos of them that I've seen have shown them to be armed with Spencers. "Guns of the Western Indian War" by R. S. Dorsey has a photo of a Modoc Scout armed with a Spencer on pg.72
Looking at the photo you've posted looks for anything like a Spencer... Spencer is my vote.

Two Flints, The same picture is in John McAulay's new book U.S. Military Carbines page# 161. He shows it in the chapter on post war carbines 1866-1874.
I vote Spencer,  But can anyone tell the model Spencer it is? Mike Union Guards

Hello the Camp  :D,
O.K., I'll go out on a limb- It is definitly a spencer, and more than likely a 56-50.  My main source would be Marcot (of course) for the caliber, and Firearms of the Old West, Gariuaglia and Worman.  Of course, there is the distinct chance I am full of something smelly.

O.K, I'm full of it- it is more than likely a 1860 refurbished.
